Wilkie Marti cleverly keeps gritty elements of what our feeble normal minds might think unhumans live like and inserts them into characters who live in the human community. Makes you start looking at your local bank managers pasty pallor in a whole new light. Each book in the series provides a different mystery and weaves in new characters without losing touch with those you were introduced to before. It keeps the interest alive and builds familiarity and fondness.
By the end of book four I know that I adore the old girl, would certainly Bank with Sid, will never step across the threshold of the Feathers (although I will accept a lift from Billy) and... my only gripe, I could never spend an evening with Andy. The books are written from the Andy POV and he is portrayed and a harmless but accident prone young man. Unfortunately, I have failed to warm to him or his new wife Daphne at all. He comes across to me a whiny, selfish, cowardly and a buffoon. Fortunately for Wilkie I'll keep buying because I adore Wilbur.
I'm not going to give the plot lines away, but will say that this series is extremely well written, and offers an astute observation of humanity blind to the not so human, which may or may not live amongst us. Hobbes, Andy and Mrs Goodfellow left us both feeling completely bereft when we had finished the books, and we both found it hard to start reading something else for a few days. I'm now on my second book since I finished the series, both from authors I enjoy, and I'm still thinking about Hobbes and Co. There are shades of Terry Pratchett in these books, but set in our world, and this series is the one I have enjoyed the most for quite a long time.
Put your feet up, suspend disbelief and have a really good laugh. You won't regret it. Highly recommended.
Whereas I love Hobbes, the old Girl, Billy, Dregs and crew. More please, Mr Martin, but perhaps kill off Andy???
I can relate to the character of Andy, I'm not sure if I would be a brave as him but it is nice to have a main character who is not an adventure-loving brave superman, just a normal person like most of us.
This story allows us a further glimpse into Andy's strange world.
