Staggering facts and figures (great wall, for instance) are interwoven with fascinating anecdotes. Examples? One actor was so ill when filming a key scene, it was feared he would need to be hospitalized. The flaming swords duel was dangerously for real, far fewer special effects added than one would expect. Outstanding sequences are explored in great detail, not least the events at the notorious Red Wedding. Cast give reactions when their characters meet an often most bloody demise.
Throughout one is in awe at how what seemed insurmountable challenges were painstakingly overcome.
Lavishly illustrated and impressively detailed, this handsome volume does the series proud.
Icing on the cake? Although looking most expensive, it in fact is not - in so many ways, the perfect present.
If you're already the owner of 'Inside Game of Thrones I' you won't be surprised by the layout of this book. However, because a lot of characters who appeared in Seasons 1 and 2 show up in this book, you don't get as many 'character profiles'. Obviously the likes of the Martells, Tullys, The Brotherhood Without Banners, Tyrells and Reed children are explored but overall HBO seem to have gone for a different approach with this book, and it works well.
Like the last book, which concentrated on big moments in the show (Ned's Execution, The Crowning of Viserys, Blackwater), they've focused even more on key moments this time around. The Red/Purple Weddings get due attention, as does the Battle of Castle Black. Even the less 'grandiose' moments such as Ser Jorah's Exile and the brilliant Prologue of 'Two Swords' are given some spotlight. It was great to read interviews and get the inside scoop on how these things came to fruition.
Also, locations and costume designs are described in painstaking detail and even The Faith of The Seven are showcased (albeit briefly). Once again these were a pleasure to read and gave me a deeper sense of appreciation for what these people go through to bring George RR Martin's vision to life. On top of that there's a really insightful opening chapter about the Title Theme/Title Visuals which grabbed my attention. Couple that with a quirky 'Epilogue' and you've definitely got yourself a really good book.
Unfortunately I feel like they've let the show down in places and failed to give each big moment its just desserts.Read more ›
This book is jam packed with information about the show starting with scouting locations, creating the theme tune and title sequence and inventing a new language (High Valyrian was limited to just a few words and phrases in the books). Pretty much every single page has at least one (if not several) beautiful glossy photo, drawing or diagram - enough to keep you amused for hours if you're just flipping through the book - but there is so much more to it than that. It's also packed with interviews with both cast and crew members, insights into costume designs, family trees, information about the history of various characters and their families, discussions about the differences between the books and the TV show and a detailed look at the major plot events from each series along with an episode by episode breakdown.
If you're a fan of Game of Thrones then this book is a MUST read, it's the kind of book you can leave sat on your coffee table and just keep diving in and out of every time you have a few minutes to spare and I'm sure you'll find something different to hold your attention every time.
