However, the reason I've given this a 5 star rating is because there is no hype in this book. There's no - "anyone can do this", or "You can be anything you want to be if you really believe". Nice sentiments, but do those sorts of things work in real life?
Gary has chosen 21 very different people, with one thing in common. They're happy to share the down's as well as the up's of running your own business and about what it truly means to be an entrepreneur.
It's punchy, practical and there are some great messages and insights which anybody can grab and apply in their own lives. If you're toying with going it alone - or if you're already there and have lost some of your spark - give this book a read. I have no doubt it'll give you just the boost you need to kickstart your own journey towards success!
Whether you are thinking of going into business or have already taken the leap, there is something in this book for you. It serves as an excellent resource to `dip into', and is highly readable in that sense, but it also allows common themes to emerge; themes that are at the heart of what will concern a budding business person, allowing you to build up a `toolkit' of personal resources that can serve to motivate you towards success.
The interviews themselves are honest and insightful; running a business is not always a bed of roses, and the 21 entrepreneurs interviewed have revealed the thorns they have found, along with their own advice for helping to blunt their impact.
Gary's book is a fabulously inspiring read for anyone involved in business, at whatever level; I devoured it in an afternoon, and if you're looking for a book that will inspire you and give you practical, honest advice, then you really won't go far wrong with this."
It is not filled with hype and shares the common challenges most of us face in running a business.
Those who contributed shared common challenges and there were also some common traits that arose over and over again.
If you are in business and finding it a challenge, this will remind you that you are not alone. If you are thinking about setting up in business it will provide you with insights on what it takes.
In `Inside the Entrepreneur's Mind' we find an eclectic mix of characters, from a variety of different businesses and backgrounds, some of who appear surprised to find that they've arrived at the destination called `success'. It would appear that there is no clear single path to becoming an entrepreneur, nor a genetic predisposition. This gives hope to us all. Any excuses for not trying are roundly dealt with when you read some of the challenges that have been overcome.
Each interview contains a treasure chest of very do-able tips and advice. All in all, it's a very encouraging and motivating read.
Gary has drawn from these people their experiences and triumphs and the times when they've had to pick themselves up again, and I've read the interviews and thought, "yes, done that, been there."
If you are a small business owner in the UK and you use Twitter, there's a fair chance that, like me, you know some of these people and know their stories to be genuine and uplifting. If not, do as Gary suggests and seek them out. Seek him out too. This book demonstrates just how well he knows his stuff.
Whilst reading I found myself able to associate with the interviewees and seeing some of my own struggles and setbacks reflected here. I've gained some really useful advice from people who have stood where I am today and who have taken the time to share their knowledge and mistakes.
This is a great book for anyone in business who has that moment of self-doubt or who simply needs a push in the right direction."
