Inside Buckingham Palace is a bit dated, having been published in 1991, before the collapse of the Waleses, Yorks' and Phillips' marriages, but since life in Buckingham Palace is so hide bound, most of its content is still no doubt accurate. The focus is not so much on personalities as on procedures and practicalities: how things are done.
I enjoyed seeing the layout of their private apartments, and could appreciate why they prefer their other homes! They live on a corridor with very little privacy. It was also interesting to read about the experience of being invited to the palace through the eyes of a guest. The Queen is a professional at 'small talk' and feigning interest in the broadest possible array of topics, but when she starts to tangle with an elderly school teacher about whether creativity can be taught, (Her Majesty arguing the negative), we get to see the limitations of her thinking and her curiosity. I thouight that passage alone was worth the price of the book.
Hmmm, I guess that is a window into her personality after all...
I enjoyed it so much that it deserves a 5.
