I have the opportunity to study the subject of Innovation and New Product Development with the author of this book at University of Portsmouth. I bought several textbooks on the same subject and had the ability to compare them. I would say that this one covers all the basic syllabus and at the same time focuses on the important theory in more detail. I particularly liked the links with history of innovation and major discoveries throughout the latest centuries. It is an easy to read book with a lot of examples to explain the frameworks.

Had this book since it came out and ordered another copy for my dad.

Unfortunately, even when the latest edition just came out some of the case studies were already dated. My other complaint is that it seems that it lacks focus, a lot of areas are covered but I find that some of them lack depth.

Also, one should pay attention to the subtitle "and New Product Develoment" as this books mostly talks about products (and services) disregarding other forms of innovation. Personally perefer Oxford University Press books on the subject.

I bought this because I had to - it was a set text on a course I was doing. Being a bit of a rebel, I didn't read it much during the course, but one day I took it to an audition - I was queueing with my ten-year-old, who wanted a part in a movie. I got into Chapter 6 and was hooked. Trott knows his stuff, and explains it very lucidly, in an exquisite balance between practicality and academic rigour.

The Third Edition dealt with the Guinness Widget as a major case study - the Fourth Edition (the one I bought) has the widget patent as an appendix. The main case study has been replaced with Viagra, another epic. Trott gets you in there, if he ever wants to leave academia behind, he could do fiction or journalism (if there is any distinction) .... His stuff on Cork (wine bottles, not Ireland) is first-rate also. You really feel for the guys who have planted trees 40 years ahead, faced with the various disruptive innovations in wine closure.

Some day I will finish this book, what I have already read has well justified the investment.

This is a great book. I used it on my Master's program and even if you're just interested in the subject, it should be very useful. The language is simple to understand, there are lots of examples and study cases.
Very highly recommended.
