Format: Paperback
I came across Magnan through The Murdered House, which was absolutely brill in a Jean de Florette sort of way. This one is a bit more Joanne Harris-like - Provencal village life seen through the eyes of a coming of age teenager who lusts after the big house widow. There is a murder underpinning the story and the resolution of that lovers' killing maintains the dramatic tension. Mostly though, it's 1945 French village life through the lens of a wry observer. Patricia Clancy is an excellent translator, as the prose really sparkles.

Great writing - translates well. Plot and descriptions spare and thrilling. A real sense of place is created in the writing.
