I have read many of Lena Kennedy's books and normally I love them. This book is well written and very interesting. It doesn't focus on a particular hero or heroine but tells the story of a hamlet over many years. The thing is, it was terribly terribly miserable. Neverending death and sadness. Some sad parts are expected but the whole book was sad. However it was very eye opening to the poverty of the times and the working conditions of young children in the nineteenth century.
