"Initiation" is the reason to purchase this two film DVD if you're into slashers. It's the story of a college girl made to take part in a sorority prank involving breaking into the local shopping mall that's owned by her parents. Earlier a killer had escaped from a nearby mental asylum and then ends up at the mall.
This is a very good 80's slasher that has surprisingly been quite forgotten. The film contains some bloody deaths, the usual type characters and a bit of gratuitus nudity as well. It's well directed with many suspenseful moments and good music that adds to the tension. The ending was very good too with an exciting face off and final twist.

"Mountaintop Motel Massacre" is basically about a crazy woman who starts killing all the guests at the Motel she runs. She goes through secret passages and trap doors to get into the guests rooms before killing them.
I know this is quite a campy horror and has a bit of a cult following, but personally I found it a bit boring. I don't hate the film but it's definitely something i wouldn't rush to watch again. It takes ages for the deaths to begin and even then they aren't that great and all quite the same. The film is poorly directed and the acting terrible, but some may get more from this than me.

This is a rather good early 80's slasher about a bunch of sorority girls getting picked off one by one in a mall at night, starring the lovely Daphne Zuniga from the dorm that dripped blood, the fly 2 and spaceballs, they have to complete a task as part of their initiation but somebody is watching them and killing them, Daphne's character has recurring dreams about something she has forgotten about her past and it all comes to light as the plot unfolds, the film has a typical twisted ending that you don't see coming, great movie really worth checking out, plenty of bloody kills, 80s classic, good picture as it's an arrow release but the DVD has no decent features unfortunately and as far as I know no bluray release.

Well a sorority prank that was so unlikely..A store owned by one on the collage girls parents was a task for the "Initiation".

The idea was fun, to take the cloths from the store guard..Things did not go to plan..

What followed was not for the teen was not fun..Like in Halloween there was an escaped killer who turned up at the mall. The rest you can see for yourself.

If you like slasher horror, and the occasional flash of nudity and couple that with some good acting and a good plot..Then this is for you..I like slasher films, and this was as good as Sorority Row, and that was good.

That's just enough as not to spoil the plot..

It's fair to say that The Initiation is like two different movies molded into one. The first half concentrates on the lead actresses bad nightmares played by Daphne Zuniga in her first film role. Whilst the second half is played out in her fathers mall, where a small prank turns into a murder night.

Zuniga is spectacular given that this is her debut- she has real screen presence. Vera Miles plays her mother and Clu Gulager appears as her father, though is not in the film for too long. This was the only movie Larry Stewart ever directed, his other efforts were TV shows.

This is typical 80s slasher nonsense but it's a real fun film, has a decent bodycount and quite a few gore moments. If you buy the region 1 DVD avoid the blurb on the back that gives away a significant plot from the story. Though when you are done with the film flip the back to see Gulager's name spelt Glu Gluager.......

I had never heard of this movie but I am glad I came across it. It isn't non stop gore and suspense but more of a horror drama with a nice twist at the end. The death scenes are good, it isn't predictable. If you like horror drama movies with a slow build up with plentiful back story and psychological elements, this is the DVD for you.

In this double feature, we have two rather obscure 80's slasher films. The first film was The Initiation. It's about a young college student Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga) who has nightmares involving a man attacking her parents (Vera Miles and Clu Gulager). The dream always ends with the mystery man getting torched after falling into a fireplace. As a pledge for Delta Rho Chi, Kelly is forced to break into her father's mall and steal the night watchman's clothes. Someone else is lurking in the mall and they're only interested in taking lives.

The Initiation follows the traditional slasher formula well, with added stars (Miles and Gulager), young, talented unknowns (Zuniga, Hunter Tylo, James Read), new wave band (Refugee) performing at a party, shower scenes, bloody deaths, etc. Following the formula so closely is a good thing. The film makers set out to create an entertaining slasher for slasher fans and in my opinion they have succeeded. What makes The Initiation a stand out slasher is the strong performances, Larry Stewart's direction, and Charles Pratt's great script. Daphne Zuniga played the lead heroine really well, after her short lived stint in the not so great slasher flick (The Dorm That Dripped Blood), she gets the main role in this movie and she truly shines.

This movie is certainly a lot of fun the cat-'n-mouse antics as the killer chases the teens around the mall in what comes across like a roller-boogie take on the setting of Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978). It is also probably about now that I should mention the lively modus operandi of the slasher- dispatching victims with axes, harpoons, arrows; it's not really that gory but still well done.
