Product Description

Steve Carell, Jim Carrey and Steve Buscemi star as magicians in this comedy from director Don Scardino. When ticket sales for double act Burt Wonderstone (Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Buscemi)'s Las Vegas stage show begin to dwindle due to new rival Steve Gray (Carrey), the duo pull out all the stops on a big trick. The stunt doesn't go to plan, however, and Anton moves to Cambodia, leaving Burt without a partner or a job. With help from his assistant, Jane (Olivia Wilde), and the magician who inspired him as a child, Rance Hanson (Alan Arkin), Burt tries to rediscover his passion for magic and reunite with Anton.

From an unpromising premise, Steve Buscemi and Steve Carrell pull off a film which, despite beginning slowly, builds to the most extraordinary trick imaginable, which truly comes alive in the part after the film is over usually assigned to the out-takes.

I wasn't expecting a great deal from this film, but there was enough to keep it going until what appears to be Wonderstone's (Carrell's) darkest moment. It's from there that the magic takes off. Performing tricks in an old people's home, his act is ruined by Alan Arkin as Rance Holloway, Wonderstone's childhood inspiration. The film then locks itself back together in an entirely unexpected way. By turns touching and hilarious, the last twenty minutes are about as good a finish as you are going to get in a film of this kind.

We really liked this film. It isn't going to be a classic, and it isn't the kind of thing you'll want to watch three times in a row, but it is heartwarming and chuckle-generating, and much, much better than I thought it was going to be. That's quite a trick.

Basically, this movie - about two warring magicians - got a lot of flack at the box office and was almost branded `a flop.' Yes, it's no masterpiece. It's not even a comedy masterpiece. Perhaps people expected more because of the talent on display. They may have a point - the film does have a stellar cast and maybe it should have been better, or funnier than it actually is. However, just because it's no classic, doesn't mean that it's not worth watching.

It's light-hearted and easy-going. The gags - while occasionally predictable - are still amusing. You may not have many `belly laughs' but, if you're in the mood for something that isn't very serious and quite frothy, the film should maintain a little smile on your face all the way through.

You may get a little more out of it if you're a fan of any or all of the actors. Steve Carell and Jim Carrey are top-billed and for a reason - they play their (kind of stupid) parts very well.

My only gripe is that it ran for about ten minutes too long in my opinion. It probably could have been trimmed somewhere in the middle to make it just that little bit tighter. Still fun though.

Steve Carell stars as a sexist egotist Vegas magician not named David Copperfield. He has a fall from grace as his act grows stale. He breaks up with his partner (Steve Buscemi) who then in a hilarious scene hands out magic kits to kids in the third world. The magic world has become infatuated with shock magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey) who does incredible and grotesque street performances for the Internet called "Brain Rape". Even Burt's assistant (Olivia Wilde) leaves him. It isn't until Burt hits rock bottom that he realizes he must change and not just his act.

The film is a blend of off-colored humor and heart warming moments. It is a popcorn comedy and not the best work of any of its stars. It is worth a rental and might make for a date night film.

Parental Guide: 1 F-bomb Alan Arkin slips in real fast in the middle. No nudity. Implied sex and sex talk. 3 1/2 stars

This is one of my FAVOURITE movies, but the Blu-ray is either expensive or unavailable (in South Africa).
The only reasonable way to get this movie on Blu-ray is to order from Amazon like I did, and I am THRILLED that I did!
This movie is 100%, and WORTH IT on Blu-ray!

Not a classic, but a routine comedic outing for Steve Carell who delivers, while Steve Buscemi adds to the comedic value as Carell's dim but loveable partner. Alan Arkin I thought is brilliant as the old time magician, but Jim Carrey though doesn't really pack in his usual lunacy that the film may have benefited from. Nonetheless watchable.

I am a fan of both Steve Carell and Jim Carrey but I had never heard of this until I was recommended it on Amazon and for £3 or so it was cheap so I picked it up as a stocking filler for my son. We all laughed lots watching this, particularly at Jim Carrey's character, he is crazy and it's worth watching just for him.
We thoroughly enjoyed this so it was definitely money well spent and I have been recommending this to all my friends and family.
