In this DVD, Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Curtis, 'two teachers from Minnesota', discuss the highlights of their book by the same title. They share their successful use of the simple concept of 5-point scales to help students understand and control their emotional reactions to everyday events that might otherwise set in emotion escalating reactions. Whether it is inappropriate touching, obsessions, yelling, hitting or making hurtful statements to classmates, use of the scale helps break down a given behavior and, with the student's active participation, develop a unique scale that identifies the problem and, just as important, suggests alternative, positive behaviors at each level of the scale.

He thought that the book was very funny, but was curious to know more. We have looked at the book together and I can see that he will want to start to implement the use of the 5 point scale as a way of controlling his temper-tantrums.
Although we haven't got very far as yet, I think that it is a great starting point. I also liked the extra pages at the back which allow the parent/care-giver to photocopy them to devise their own tailor made 5 point scale with their child.
A very useful book for any child that has difficulty with controlling their emotional responses.
I first used advice from this book in a primary school (after sharing it with the class teacher) where students voice level was too high. - Mostly pupils with ADHD; they didn't realise they were being so loud, so using the 5 point scale helped them to have a visual gauge for whereabouts their voice/noise level was. The class teacher asked me to make a 5 point noise indicator to stick on the classroom wall and pointed to it for specific children so that they could see how loud they were being. Also, all members of staff involved with the students wore a smaller printed version which we had made up and laminated, for use when working with individuals or with smaller groups. The book does indicate that you will need to be persistent in its use, before it takes effect. It really did work after a short time.
Later I came across a student who spoke with a really quiet whisper and eventually the student would point to the scale and ask whereabouts his voice was on the scale, so that he could moderate the volume.
I haven't tried it out with other behavioural issues.
I have revised the stars I earlier rewarded this item, because it can be pricey and have seen some merchants trying to sell it for £70 - £300+. It certainly isn't worth that much. I bought this book new from Amazon EU S.a.r.L. and only paid £11.56 including postage. Although I am finding that most products purporting to help support SEN students are expensive and exploitative; this is no different and I certainly wouldn't want to pay more than I did.

This is an interesting approach. But getting my child to be bothered to listen to me for long enough and put in the effort was just not going to happen. Read morePublished on 19 Aug. 2013 by Mrs V
