I can't find any reference to this being a stage play but I'm sure it is. In which case it just proves stage plays directly adapted to film don't work - if it ever was a stage play to begin with. Confused. (If it was a stage play - then five stars for it in a theatre context)

I saw this on TV when abroad and made a note of its title to get the DVD as I just had to watch it again

Starring Ray Winstone (Colin Diamond - the Cuckold husband ) , Ian McShane (Meredith - a cold homosexual Intellectual), Tom Wilkinson (Archie who loves his mum and is a very loyal friend), John Hurt ( a odious, vicious and nasty ex jailbird with a yearning for the bad old days), Steven Dillane (Mal, a mad dog without conscience, hell bent on revenge) Joanne Whalley (The wife).

In a lot of the other reviews the reviewers seem to have missed what I saw. It's about a gang of ageing friends supporting a mate who has been jilted by his wife. The principal character Ray Winston "captures" his wife's younger lover and takes him to a deserted house where the gang decide what to do with him. From there on it has a shade of "Reservoir Dogs" about it, as it all takes place within one room with a few flash backs.

In my opinion the part where they are taunting the unfortunate "lover" about what he has done was hilarious - evil but so funny. The quips and interaction between the characters was superb, everyone giving stellar performances.
I can't claim to be a great John Hurt fan but here gave the best performance of his career, well worth an Oscar.

Unlike the dreadful Births, Marriages, Deaths, 44 Inch Chest is well worth watching. John Hurt's 'Peanut' is authentic and Ray Winstone is reminiscent of Hamlet as he procrastinates over the fate of his wife's captive young lover. Winstone's gang are a nasty bunch and there are more cunning stunt expletive's from 'Peanut' than Evil Knievel managed in his career. Ian McShane plays an intriguing gangster queen and Steven Berkoff makes a great cameo appearance as a coke-fuelled gambling mobster resplendent in a black fur coat. From the other reviews I'd suggest that this movie is underrated perhaps because there is not much action - no guns or car chases thank goodness - but it does portray betrayal and emotional pain perfectly. Winstone is devastated when wife Joanne Whalley (stunningly seductive here) tells him she has met someone new. Ray is shocked, furious, violent and then has a mental breakdown while deciding whether to kill her lover or not. He excels at this kind of thing. His ability to summon up greif and suffering would not be out of place in a Shakespearian tragedy. One scene, where the hostage puts his hands on the tearful Ray's head, has biblical iconography.
I have just two criticisms. Firstly, actors never seem as nasty as real bad guys. Perhaps because we would not want to see that level of evil in a movie. Secondly, this is very short film. After an hour I was curious as to what would happen next? The answer was nothing. It was the end. It states approximately 90 minutes but it seemed more like an hour at most. What there was of it was very enjoyable. If you've ever been rejected by someone you love passionately you'll understand the meaning and message of Ray's performance. JP.

This is an underrated master piece in my opinion, it's gripping from start to finish,
and less than ninety minutes long for impatient viewers, I would also say there is modern day shakespeare in this.
One of the best psychological films I've seen, along with 'Sexy Beast'.

We were looking forward to watching this for quite a while but never got round to it, but what a disappointment the plot lacks any depth and its a very, very slow burner. There are some elements of dark humour in there but I would say this is definitely one to miss.

How can such a fabulous cast result in a film as awful as this? I can only imagine they didn't read the script before they signed. I accept that it's set in gangland London but there really must be more than two words in the vocabulary of the average gangster. Have only given it one star because it wouldn't let me give it no stars.

Trailer looked really exciting so decided to buy it. Unfortunately the trailer is most unleading and is not representative of the film. It just moves along at a snail's pace. Will be trading mine in tomorrow. Mind you, loved John hurt's character with his false teeth and coarse language

Ray Winstone' ( Great 'Brit' Actor ) plays 'Colin' who is out of the blue told by his wife 'Liz' (Joanne Whalley) that she's seeing someone else, and their 21 year marriage is over.
'Colin' is devastated, four of his mates gather to support their friend, deciding to kidnap 'Colin's' wife's lover so their friend can exact revenge for his loss.
The film has a collection of familiar faces on board including 'John Hurt' 'Ian McShane' 'Tom Wilkinson' and 'Stephen Dillane' The film at times although dealing with a sensitive situation, does in fact fringe on humorous at times as the five friends ' f '-it and blind it through much of the film.
Have to say, despite a great cast list, the patter between them does drift on some.
It's worth watching, if but once....
