About the Author

ATHANASIUS, Bishop of Alexandria and one of the most illustrious defenders of the Christian faith, was born at Alexandria about the year 297. Before the outbreak of the Arian controversy, which began in 319, Athanasius had made himself known as the author of two essays addressed to a convert from heathenism, one of them entitled Against the Gentiles, and the other On the Incarnation of the Word. Both are of the nature of apologetical treatises, arguing such questions as monotheism, and the necessity of divine interposition for the salvation of the world; and already in the second may be traced that tone of thought respecting the essential divinity of Christ as the "God-man" for which he afterwards became conspicuous. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This is an outstanding classic. Though written as far back as the early 4th Cen. Athanasius' treatment of the nature of God and the place of The Incarnation from creation through the atonement to eternity, is second to none.

A wonderful description of why the incarnation was needed and what was achieved by it. This is the best I have read on the subject and proves that the church fathers are not unwieldy and heavy to read. This book is a must read for anyone interested in early christianity.

This is a required reading for any Christian seeking the truths of the nature of the incarnation of Christ. It's a standard and worth reading, though some of the subject matter is a bit dated (it IS 4th century). The main arguments put forward for the deity, eternity and bodily resurrection of Christ are not mind-bending theology but put into 'lay' terms for any reader. Not overlong but also not the deepest spiritual work ever written. One to tick off your list IMHO.

I enjoyed reading this short Christian classic by St Athanasius. He lays very important foundational truths. Highly readable and very clearly written. A 2012 translation of the English perhaps is needed to ensure it continues to command wider readship. My rating of 4/5 is merely that it does not quite belong in that category, yet, where I anticipate re-reading it. Not because it does not deserve 5/5, but because more fuller exposition of the issues now exist elsewhere, which undoubtedly have built on this.

Athanasius and his writings came to my attention when researching a particular belief (kenosis) that had crept into our Church. This is a very deep and profound look at the incarnation and its implications for the world. Good to read around Christmas to remind ourselves of what, exactly, the incarnation is actually about!
