Product Description

docking station

UASP Supported
Offline data cloning

Supports up to 16 TB

Inateck's attractive gamer style FD2005 is an excellent solution for transferring and organizing data on SSD & HDD SATA drives. It features two docking ports that can be used simultaneously and support drive up to 16 TB!

Offline Cloning

Don't have a computer? No problem! FD2005 supports computer free offline cloning! Only offline clone can be supported.

UASP Superspeed

We've included the ASM1156 chip in it. This supports UASP, which means dependable, high-quality data transfers to and from your external hard drive at speeds up to 6 Gbps!

Auto-Sleep Function

The FD2005's automatic sleep function is an excellent feature. It conserves energy and prevents overheating, but this wasn't enough. We had to make sure this feature was user friendly and we did just that using an intuitive LED lighting system.

Intuitive LED Lighting System

The left-hand light and right-hand light will turn blue respectively when either Disk A or Disk B are inserted, and will flash when either is activated. Four blue LED lights clearly track your data's progress during offline cloning from 25% to 50%, 75% and finally 100%.

Easy Cloning

Easy Cloning
This does exactly what I wanted it to do - clone a boot disk. Really very easy process and it is a standalone device - no software needed to clone. My use case was to replace a 128GB ssd boot disk with a newer 1TB Samsung EVO unit. Inserted the disks as indicated, press and hold the clone button for 3 seconds then release and press again - the disk is now cloning. Few minutes later all done. Placed the freshly cloned disk in the system. As I had used a destination disk of larger capacity it was necessary to adjust the volume size in disk manager, but this is only a few clicks. This is a very easy to use product, would recommend 5/5

The "Inateck USB 3.0 to SATA Dual Bay Hard Drive Docking Station in Gamer Style with Offline Clone Function for 2.5/ 3.5 Inch SATA I/II/III HDD and SSD, Support UASP and 8 TB Drives, Black(FD2005)" is to replace an older dock. After upgrading the nearly full system SSD in my desktop, there were requests by others within the wider family to perform similar upgrades on a couple more PCs and this will make the task easier and faster, although likely to continue needing to use a software cloner - that used is highly reliable and worked very well with data drives and the system SSD in my Windows PC. Some adjustments to partition layouts will be later required.

Although offering a Clone function, that is unlikely to prove useful if cloning Windows 10 UEFI-controlled drives. For storage drives, it will be ideal and requires the dock to be off-line and disconnected from USB. There is a small User Guide but it does not specifically address the UEFI conflict issue within its brief help FAQs.

There are two large drive activity lights, one each for the A & B sections, at the front and a row of 5 smaller ones along the top-front edge. The first is Power and the others are progress indicators in 25% steps that are dedicated to the Off-Line clone function. Cable connections are to rear as is the Power switch. The unit is about as attractive as one of its type can be and is sufficiently small to permanently sit on a desk. Unless the user is a technician, it isn't likely to be used frequently and could be set aside on a shelf ready for use.

Used several times in the first days of ownership, all but one attempt to clone a drive proceeded without a hitch; one with recorded 'Hardware Errors' on a certain destination drive (which was later replaced) although the same source drive was previously and subsequently cloned onto other units trouble-free. The dock functions to full expectation and easily. Clone speeds will vary and depend upon the relative capacities of the units to be copied. A data drive was later successfully copied (only for testing) via the in-built Clone function and that resulted in a perfect copy.

I bought one of these a year or two ago to use with an old tiny form factor PC as a NAS. I now own two of them for a 4 bay NAS running CentOS.

One reviewer mentioned performance issues but they perform exactly as I would expect. Here's a benchmark of a WD Red 8tb in the dock:

    # sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sde
    /dev/sde:
    Timing cached reads: 18056 MB in 1.99 seconds = 9066.53 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 624 MB in 3.01 seconds = 207.62 MB/sec

This is exactly what I would expect from a SATA drive (and keep in mind WD Reds are tailored to reliability, not performance). Given that I'm accessing the drives over a gigabit lan anything over 125MB/s is wasted anyway. Looking at benchmarks online, I don't believe the drive would perform any better in an actual SATA port connected to the motherboard.

At this price you, of course, don't get RAID but software RAID works perfectly with the disks in the dock. Obviously there are pros/cons to that but for my purposes it does exactly what I need. I just created a mirrored, striped ZFS file system (Basically RAID 10 with better error checking) across 4 disks, it works great.

There are so many enclosures out there that cost double or five times this. Unless you need the additional features, these are fantastic, and because they are open rather than enclosures, the drives don't get too hot.

My only gripe (or question, really) is that are these really limited to 8tb or is that all there is official support for. It would be nice to know if anyone's tested these with 10 or 12tb drives to see if they work.

Ok, so I have had this for a while and I do not do that many reviews compared to the number of Amazon products I buy however I needed to let everyone know my experiences with this and other caddies. I have three caddies each from different manufacturers and recently purchased a 10TB HDD for storage etc. I used the other two caddies which said they were compatible with 10TB however repeatedly would corrupt and lose all the data and had to choice but to reformat and start again. I tried this repeatedly and then went to this caddy, which is the oldest I have. It worked perfectly and had been working perfectly for more than a month of repeated shutdowns and restarts and even a few BSODs (not frequent but do happen ).

So the moral of the story is this: even if something states a level of compatibility, it doesnt matter unless it works in the real world. This one works well so I recommend it :)

Good price, function, performance (@150MB/s / 1.2Gbps to my Toshiba 2TB P300 High Performance HDD) & quick delivery.
My disks were new and didn't show up in Windows 10 - I had to use Windows Disk Manager to initialise them (this is noted in the user guide, but the very last note - could be earlier in the document!).

The Disk Duplicate feature is great, but not that well documented. I found it:
    a) Copied the disk [Volume] name which wasn't mentioned and could be confusing as you end up with 2 disk with the same name (I thought it would just copy the file system, but it's more like a full disk duplicator)
    b) During duplication it adjusted the target disk partition size to be the same size as the source so I had to extend it in Windows Disk Manager (the source disk was 1Tb and the destination was 2TB - on the destination it deleted the original 2TB partition and made it 1TB)
    c) Took me a while to figure that duplication made one of the disks go into an Offline state and I couldn't see it anymore. I had to use Windows Disk Manager to put its state back to Online

If the documentation were improved it would have got 5 Stars - thats all that let it down.
