I saw this on TV years ago, but to this day it unsettles me to think about it. The premise is a small-town community who slowly lose all human restraint due to the effects of a microscopic amount of some sort of military nerve agent, secretly stored underground in the hills above the town, that leeches into their food supply due to an earthquake. Some people will find a few of the scenes surreal and disturbing, and they certainly remain etched in my memory nearly 20 years on. It also raises interesting questions about what humans are capable of if conscience and self-control are eroded. Definitely worth watching.

Meg Tilly and Tim matheson play a young couple who return to the farm Meg's character grew up on so she can introduce her new man to her family, her salt of the earth father and her slightly creepy (and somewhat incestuous) brother played by the ever-great Bill paxton. Unfortunately for everyone involved, an earthquake at a nearby government installation has unleashed a deadly biological agent that causes the infected to lose all inhibitions and act on whatever impulses they have! Pretty soon the idyllic norman rockwell small town descends into anarchy and murder.

Impulse is a great little horror from the early eighties that for quite a while was fairly difficult to come by. It was briefly released on VHS and 23rd century have released a rip that can probably be found on the right market stall but is of dubious legality (though not bad quality). This MGM release however is the only genuine legit release of this movie going at the minute. Overall its not a phenomenal package, there are no extras to speak of, its fullscreen (though It seems it may have been shot that way) and my biggest gripe is the rubbish cover.

Ok, from the sleeve art the film looks like some god awful soft core erotic movie, it's nothing of the sort! People looking for some cheap alone-time thrills will most likely be dissappointed and I am more than willing to bet a few horror fans who didn't know what this movie was probably passed it up.

Shame really as its a cracking little movie. The towns descent into madness is well handled and avoids any gratuitous gore while still managing to shock. Throughout the film we see a strange jeep parked up watching events unfold, strongly suggesting the government is letting the virus run its course and observing what happens, a nasty little twist I suspect the makers of the crazies remake 'borrowed' for that movie.

If you can find it at the right price, disregard the awful cover and pick it up. It's well worth watching.

Very good, well acted little horror/sci-fi thriller with a nice support cast (including Hume Cronyn, John Karlen and a young Bill Paxton) for Meg Tilly and Tim Matheson to play off, and an interesting set-up.

With a film like this the set-pieces are vital and this has some memorable moments of the respectable townsfolk going nuts.
It's all played deadly serious as well which is nice to see.
It's a dark, bleak but entertaining little movie and deserves a higher profile.

Decent and very overlooked, this mid 80's gem from OMEN 3:THE FINAL CONFLICT director Graham Baker comes across like a moodier, more sombre version of George Romero's THE CRAZIES.
Boasting decent performances from the talented Meg Tilly (whither her now??),Hume Cronyn and Tim Matheson, some judiciously used but very unsettling violence and one hell of a bleak ending, just a shame that such a good little movie has been given one of THE naffest and most inappropriate dvd covers of all time by MGM! Shame on them! It looks like a bad Brat Pack romance, guys!!
Well worth purchasing, and wait for the bit with the fingers in the bar!!

This film does not seem to be available on UK release so I had to get a US one and view on my computer! It's a twist on the zombie type genre and although there is no gore in it, it does have a great story line and no dull spots to lose interest at.

There is one particularly 'steamy' scene in the garden which gives it a boost as well, but all in all a very good film to watch.
