Albert Ayler's music isn't as well documented as it should be - although the excellent "Holy Ghost" 9CD set told his incredible musical and personal story superbly, his core catalogue drifts in and out of print and much of it has been or remains the subject of legal disputes.

With this release, Impulse plug two major gaps in their share of Ayler's legacy. "Love Cry" saw Ayler and his group re-record a number of tracks from their repertoire in shorter form as well as debuting some new pieces; for example, "Ghosts" and "Bells" are each shrunk down to just 3 minutes - enough time to state the theme a few times and not much else. As much as this may be unsatisfying for seasoned fans, this makes "Love Cry" a great introduction to Ayler's music and it's clear that passions and energies are high - Ayler's off-mic vocalising on the title track is a delight and the musicianship is first class throughout. The posthumously issued "The Last Album" is a more varied experience with the tracks all being culled from the sessions that birthed "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe" in 1969. It would be harsh to label them as "outtakes" as several pieces are absolutely up to the standard of the parent album but a couple should have remained on the studio floor and perhaps would have was it not for Ayler's untimely death.

As with a few of these Impulse twofers, the actual release is kinda bewildering. Given that they were recorded at the exact same sessions, why not put "The Last Album" with "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe"?

Positives:
* Wonderful music - incredibly rich and vibrant.
* Great value for money - currently £5 for two albums on one CD.

Negatives:
* As another reviewer has pointed out, the dates on the back are wrong. The sleeve lists Love Cry as from 1971 and lists The Last Album as from 1969. In fact, Love Cry was recorded in August 1967 and February 1968, and released later in 1968. The Last Album was recorded in August 1969 but not released until 1971, after Ayler's death.

Despite this, the music is so great that it's a five-star album. Timeless! Now I'm off to save up for the £129.99 Holy Ghost box-set...

this Impulse! label two for one release of two late Ayler dates are NOT worth buying despite the gushing reviews here.
why ? well lets expand..

recorded late in Aylers sadly short career in Love Cry and the Last Album (actually are now many last recordings : mainly live to enjoy) offer some tracks featuring the trademark Ayler sound of free , slightly histrionic sax playing deep rooted in the spirituals and blues of his homeland. free jazz icon and to some patron saint of the avane-garde Albert Ayler recorded many fine lp s and sessions (my favourite i owe thanks to my sax player friend Phil Hargreaves) but much of The Last Album and is frankly risible he recorded with his girlfriend and cohorts (including guitar and keyboards) an Lp of decidely off the wall if misguided attempts at mainstream r&b tracks with his and his girlfriends vocals on several tracks such as Again Comes the Rising of the Sun and Toiling. the sax playing is often magnificent but the vocalising er no. the recorded result as has been widely reviewed through the years (not least in the Penguin guide to Jazz) as a pretty poor lp . . it is.

there are some glorious spiritual tracks on this set though : All Love from the Last Album is superb . similar to Coltrane in approach and spirit. as are the tight ensemble free jazz of my favourite lp so far : "Vibrations" (aka the Copenhagen Tapes) recorded live in copenhagen 1968 with Peacock, Murray and Cherry is superb with some extended track lengths and a rhythm that totally understands Ayler's idiom (hear at : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9B9y_c2-M0), or lp Spiritual Unity or Live at Greenwich Village. perhaps.

HASH(0x9d2867ec) out of 5 stars Finally, the 'last' album 6 Sept. 2011

Two late Ayler albums, the Last Album for the first time on CD. Now someone needs to release the Early Recordings Volume 1 (Volume 2, for some reason, is on CD) and the complete Albert Ayler will be on CD.
Many people don't like late Impulse Albert, but if you do, this is great news and a great bargain. Note that many of these Impulse two-fers have now been released and are available at a great discount.

HASH(0x9d286a38) out of 5 stars It's all about happiness 23 Mar. 2012

Ever since I got this CD it really amazed me. This is definitely not the music for the traditional jazz fans. When I hear these records it fells like Carnaval Jazz. Amazing improvising, non stop free music, the songs have a great flow, apart from tracks like Universal Indians and the Untitled Duet maybe. Untitled Duet is the song that made interested in these records in the first place, a beautiful jam of rock and roll style trippie jazz. The series of 2on1 by Impulse are a great treasure from a time when music truly changed towards new directions. Albert Ayler was playing at John Coltrane's funeral just to give you a notion on who this guy was in the world of jazz. I'm crazy about these records!!! Enjoy true happiness!!!
