Product description

Product Description

Inspired by real events and the experiences of ex-FBI agent Michael German, IMPERIUM follows Nate Foster, an idealistic young FBI agent who is selected to go undercover amongst a group of white supremacists, suspected of initiating a terrorist plot. Immersed in a deeply unsettling, hate-filled world, Nate must fight to maintain control of his own beliefs and principles whilst working to identify the threat and keeping his true identity and motives a secret. Starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Now You See Me 2) as Foster in what is being hailed as his more powerful, transformative role to date, and featuring an outstanding supporting performance from Toni Collette (Miss You Already, Krampus) as his wisecracking fellow FBI agent, IMPERIUM also features a stellar supporting cast, including Burn Gorman(TV s Torchwood, The Dark Knight Rises), Tracy Letts (The Big Short, TV s Homeland), Nestor Carbonell (The Dark Knight Rises, TV s Bates Motel), and Sam Trammell (TV s True Blood, The Fault In Our Stars).

Daniel Radcliffe takes on 2 roles in this movie, firstly as an unconvincing FBI agent who is sent undercover to infiltrate a white supremacist group who have big plans to start a race war on US soil with the help of some explosive devices. Radcliffe's 2nd role emerges as he goes undercover as a full blown neo Nazi consumed by hate and it's this half of the central character's role that he excels in which is not a sentence I thought I would ever type. I thought the story was handled well with moments of great tension as his new found friends become suspicious of the newcomer. However, it didn't quite reach the heights of other greats from this genre because I felt the movie did lose it's way a little somewhere in the middle. Decent performance though from the man who was Harry Potter.

NB Surprised to find no subtitles on rental disc. Also surprised to find mixed reviews online for this taut drama in which a young undercover agent has to get out of danger by quick thinking and clever talk rather than fights and shoot outs. Co-written by a former infiltrator of extremist groups. Nate, played very well by Daniel Radcliffe, is trying to work out which of several groups or individuals could have the makings of and plan to use a dirty bomb in the Washington(?) area. Tense scene followed tense scene and built to a compelling ending. If you liked Spooks on TV I'd recommend this film.

This is about an over eager FBI agent – Nate Foster played by Daniel Radcliffe who is convinced to go undercover by an ‘out of the box’ thinking FBI boss. This is Toni Collette who has brushed up on cliché caricature acting especially to make this role ‘her own’. Radcliffe is to go undercover with a super nasty white supremacist group – just in case they have nicked some nuclear stuff. So far so good right?

Well after a crash course in “how to be a tad of a fascist”, Radcliffe shaves his head – dons some braces and 'an Harrington jacket' and thus is ‘Nazified’ before our very eyes. I must admit I gasped a bit at this point. Then using acting skills that would dwarf the abilities of the likes of Alec Guinness, Marlon Brando or even Chevvy Chase he manages to convince anyone that has even considered being a ‘swastika hugger’ that he is actually just like them – only smarter and cuter. I kept thinking he must have borrowed a magic wand form the Hogwarts wardrobe department to be able to pull this off.

Then the story lurches into the realms of conspiracy theory and all the usual stuff that goes along with any self respecting film on ‘cross burners’. So this is a bit disappointing in that it treads ground previously trod and even though it is dealing with some very sensitive subjects, it does so in an unambiguous and lazy way that does nothing to explore either motivation or cause of such feelings. We are presented these people as a fait accompli with no back story by way of character study. His actions are also just a bit unbelievable. If all you have to do is change your hair and clothes, buy a copy of ‘Mein Kampf’ to go undercover with White Supremacists then I am pretty sure they would have been infiltrated a while back.

I rented this movie with some trepidation but I thought the idea of casting Mr. Radcliffe in this movie would be challenging for him as an actor and interesting for me to watch.Despite the largely negative comments I actually quite enjoyed this movie mainly because it had some kind of a plot; albeit at times a bit far fetched. It was far from what I expected which was the usual stereotypical violent scenes of nazi brutality which I suspect many viewers were longing for and thus the negative reviews. It is not an action movie but more a smoldering thriller building a degree of tension obviously by the deception being played out by Radcliffe who incidentally gets a skinhead cut highlighting a remarkably full set of eyebrows! This film ticks along at a pace which was sufficient to hold my attention. Not great but watchable compared to may other new releases films I have endured lately.

Although an interesting role for the now grown up Radcliffe to take on, he is not very believable as an policeman or a skinhead. It's an ok film and it avoids the usual cliché of portraying the all of the white nationalists as inbred, mentally subnormal hicks, but it's not on a par with the recent Green room or the excellent American history x

Radcliffe is fantastic in this thriller which is a world away from his HP stuff, proving just what a versatile actor he is. And the subject of the movie seems especially pertinent in these troubled times.
