The subtitle is ‘Classic Devotions in Today’s language’ and it’s a great concept – taking the classic text on spirituality by Thomas à Kempis and arranging it into bitesize pieces, with slightly updated, more readable language. So many of the classics can seem completely inaccessible, and the way that it’s arrange in short sections makes it ideal for a devotion.

It is written (following the original) as a dialogue between Christ and his disciple, and there’s a lot of applied Biblical wisdom there. I compared the two texts briefly (the original and this one), and he really seems to keep faithfully to the original rhythm and heart of the text, so it’s a very sensitively-crafted update.

If you want to read this classic text, this is by far the easiest and most pleasurable way of doing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Devotional With Depth 19 Jan. 2016
By lhj313 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I want a devotional with meat on it. One that makes me think deeply about Christ. About my life. About what my heart, soul, and spirit should be spending time meditating on. There have been popular devotionals that others love, but I cannot seem to find any sort of depth in them. This one, however, may be small and some of the entries quite short, but nearly all of them make me think. They convict me of wrong thinking and actions. They remind me where my mind and heart should be focusing. And what really surprises me is how this was written so long ago and yet A Kempis faced the same issues we do. I guess I foolishly presume a man of God who lived centuries ago would not struggle with worldly distractions. He did not have technology. And yet he struggled. That's only one example. This is my daily go-to book. My only complaint is that it's not longer. That the shorter entries are as short as they are. This book makes me hungry for more wisdom. It brings things from Scripture that I know, but need the light shed in a way that re-illuminates the truth of Christ. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Devotional for Those Who are Hungry for the Word of God 5 April 2016
By Edie Melson - Published on Amazon.com

I'm tired of devotionals that don't go deep. Our world is a broken and damaged place, and it's time to dig down to the bedrock of God's word. James Watkins have given us what we need. He points us back to God in a way that reminds me of the classics from Tozer and Chambers. I loved this book so much I have it in print and on my Kindle. I'll be returning to it again and again. And it's one I'll be sharing as a gift to those I live!

5.0 out of 5 stars James Watkins - gifted speaker ... and author! 2 Jun. 2016
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
After hearing James Watkins speak at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writer's Conference recently, I thought, "If this guy writes half as good as he speaks, I should read his latest book." I bought the book the next day and discovered that James Watkins does not write as well as he speaks--it is even better! James said the book changed his life. I believe it. Read it and experience it yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond expectations 26 Aug. 2016
By George Biffle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
James Watkins has gone beyond my expectations in this updated version of The Imitation of Christ. While updating the language, he has not sacrificed the depth or beauty of the original. The addition of scripture references is especially helpful. I highly recommend this edition to anyone wanting to deepen their relationship with Christ.
