I'm getting married in July 2012 and I have been taking these since July 2011.

The difference in May hair and nail is brilliant.

Nails are a lot stronger and grow quiet fast plus I haven't used any nail treatment since i.ve started taking these and my hair - well it growing so fast I'm going to start calling myself Rapunzel.....

You need to take them a good 2 months for them to start working, but trust me I'm on my 4th packet and they work!!!

These claim to specifically feed your hair and nails but a comparison with standard (Boots) multivitamins + iron show that the only additional ingredient they contain is 19 mg of silica - since there is no RDA for this, it's not clear what that quantity amounts to. There are high concentrations of B vitamins and some others supplements but a good multivitamin will cover these at 100% RDA anyway, as well as all the other vitamins (A, C, D, E, K) which are not here.

The pack says that these will take at least 8 weeks before they start to make a difference, and 4-6 months before you'll see the full benefit - at the current pack price that's a pretty expensive investment. So unless you have a very specific problem with your hair/nails, a good multivitamin will offer almost everything these do and more at a fraction of the price.

I have used this product for several months recently, then when I ran out and bought a cheaper product from the UK's leading chemists. I was happy to start taking this product again and put the other product aside.

I began to use Hair and Nails when I noticed my hair was thinning out a little. It's very hard to be sure if this kind of vitamin complex works, or if it's your imagination, and the effects of supplements need a few months to become apparent, but my hair condition did improve and it does feel a lot stronger now. It's certainly going to help as it contains Biotin, which is a B complex vitamin (B7).

I'm not sure that the capsules needed the bulking agent, i.e. silica. That has no therapeutic value so why add it? The UK's leading chemist's product comes in gel capsules, which contain no bulking agents. This is my only issue with the Imedeen product, and the reason why I'm reluctant to give it more than 3 stars, as it feels a bit misleading to sell capsules which are largely filled with sand.

I noticed that the ingredients weren't listed on this page so thought I would include them to help my discussion:

Horsetail extract, thickener E464, bulking agent E460, nicotinamide, silicon dioxide, calcium D pantothenate, zinc citrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, anti caking agent E4706, thiamine monoitrate, riboflavin, D-biotin,cyanobalamin, colour E 150c.

Horsetail extract is a plant and is used as an anti- oxidant and anti-inflammatory is a wide range of medicines from thosefor tuberculosis to fluid retention and in this case brittle nails.

The capsules do contain lots of the vitamins and minerals recommended widely for hair and nail growth and strength such as biotin, silica, zinc, calcium etc. so all good stuff. However, as other reviewers have pointed out a good multivitamin acn deliver much of the same ingredients at a much cheaper price. I guess that since Imedeen is a well known and respected barnd customers trust it and feel it is "job done" to take these and that the price reflects quality.

The capsules have strong concentrations of the minerals and need to be taken with food. I feel quite ill if I don't respect this and take on an empty stomach . I also experienced this with Perfectil hair and nails.

The Imedeen website states that you need to take them for 4-6months to see the most improvement so it is a long term commitment to get results. This makes sense as it takes about 3 months to get iron levels and stores up on a high dosage when anaemic.

I think these capsules are good if you just want to maintain hair and nail health or feel your hair is a bit dry or nails brittle but I don't think they will treat serious hair thinning or hair loss caused by stress - that really needs specialist help and targetted doses of biotin etc or referral for thyroid and endochrine tests.

I would love to have better fingernails, mine are pathetic, but time will tell whether I start developing a mane of thick hair and super-nails remains to be seen. I'm already fairly hairy so I should notice a difference, in principle... If I start noticing any tangible difference then I'll extend this review, and if you're very unlucky, I'll post photos.

However I'm afraid I'm rather sceptical. As per S. Porter's review, it does sound like snake oil. More tellingly, I did a side-by-side comparison of the active ingredients (vitamins, zinc, thiamin etc.) of the Imedeen against a couple of packs of very-well-known-supermarket brand multivitamin tablets, zinc tablets or silica tablets, and essentially the ingredients are all the same, but on the supermarket brand tablets you get 100% of the recommended European Union daily allowance of each element, whereas on these Imedeen tablets, you get between 120% and 832% of your RDA of each thing- for example you get twice your RDA of Vitamin B6, twice your RDA of Vitamin B1, and EIGHT times the RDA of Biotin.

So basically, by taking these tablets, you're taking the same stuff that is in supermarket multivitamins, except you're overdosing on them ('overdosing' in the factual sense, of exceeding the recommended dose, rather than the emotive or dramatic sense). It would actually work out slightly cheaper just to buy supermarket brand multivitamins that are supposed to be 1-a-day and eat 3 of them each day instead (but just to be clear I'm NOT RECOMMENDING THIS- don't want to get into trouble!).

Zinc is supposed to be one of the important ingredients here, except you only get 1.5mg per tablet- that's 15% of your RDA.
