About the Author

Born in Bangalore, Nandan Nilekani is an Indian software entrepreneur and Co-Chairman of Infosys Technologies the company he co-founded. In 2004, Nilekani was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian decoration, as recognition for his distinguished service to the nation. In 2006, he became one of the youngest entrepreneurs to join the World Economic Forum Board. He has received international accolade for his work in the business community, most recently in Thomas Friedman's bestseller The World is Flat. He was named one of the '100 Most Influential People in the World' by TIME magazine in 2006 and Forbes' 'Business Leader of the Year' in the same year. This is his first book.

I ordered this after hearing Infosys Chairman( Narayan Murthy ) spoke of 'another' great book from 'another' (great) politician of last century in same line. Unfortunately, it was a pathetic comparison as it turned out. Author is a man who spearheaded a service giant in India. But when you look at their background and ethics. The thinking is far from absolute truth - author sees English speaking population as resources to clerical jobs of world and goes on to quote some statistics without even a graph for god sake! It is no wonder they have built body shop businesses. These men are a disgrace. I cannot recall it was the author (or shashi tharoor) who was made to wear simple clothes like other politicians in parliament. Although at the time - I felt Indian politicians cannot seem to see beyond these silly gestures but insight into men like these make me feel - they were not so wrong! Indeed Nandan has said goodbye to politics. Now go ruin some body shops please!

This the best book on India I have ever read. Nandan Nilekani nicely explains how India evolved, what are key strengths and weaknesses and pinpoints opportunities for the future. Everyone who wants to understand India and contribute to her future should read it.

If you like to read books related to finance and economics, this book is a great read. I have read several books on finance and economics like, Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan. Liers Poker by Michael Lewis, Too big to Fail by Andrew Ross Sorkin. All these books are great reads, but Imagining India: The Idea of a Renewed Nation kept me a lot more involved throughout the book. This is a well written book, very easy to understand. I would strongly recommend readers who want an understanding of how Indian policy affected its development to read this book.
