This is another amazing book by Kerby Rosanes and is the 2nd in his "Extreme colouring and search challenge" series. The first one being Animorphia and the third being Mythomorphia, which has a release date of mid April 2017. It follows the same size as the previous book which is approximately 25cm x 25cm.
Inside this book there are 80 official pages of illustrations. 24 of which are double page spreads, 6 are singular illustrations and 13 have a paired image. The paired images are side by side and contain differences mainly within the doodling portion. The majority of illustrations are either drawn all the way in to the spine or parts of the illustration sit extremely close to it. I found the spine to be very tight and even after working it, it doesn't sit flat enough, which makes certain images extremely difficult as a major aspect of it sits in the spine. An example of this would be the mechanical butterfly whose whole body sits directly in the binding.
All the illustrations are printed double sided, using alcohol markers stains the next page. If you are extremely careful and light handed with water based markers they don't stain. However as soon as you place a second layer of colour down you will see shadowing on the next page. I had no problems with gel pens but i only used them in small portions for texture. The paper itself is non perforated, of medium quality with a slightly textured surface. I used a mix of Marco Raffines and Polychromos for most of the illustrations I've completed and found that they layer and blend beautifully.
The main feature of the illustrations contained within this book are as follows: 2 swans (paired image), elephant, pharaoh, steam train (double page spread), a mechanical butterfly (double page spread), a panda, (double page spread), a bird in flight (double page spread), 2 skulls (paired image), 2 ships on a rough sea (double page spread), gorilla (double page spread), 2 sets of diving penguins (paired image), 2 pineapples (paired image), 2 spider webs (double page spread), hot air balloons (double page spread), 2 mechanical beetles (paired image), tree (double page spread), 3 deer (double page spread), a fairy-tale castle (paired image which connects via a bridge), multiple rabbits (double page spread), hot air balloon ships (paired image), a shark (double page spread), a tiger, a fancy looking bird, 2 robots (paired image), an anchor, a compass (paired image), birds escaping from a cage (double page spread), 2 jellyfish (double page spread), a dinosaur (double page spread), a wagon with horses (double page spread), a leopard (double page spread), a cityscape (double page spread), a camel (double page spread), a chrysalis (double page spread), whale's tail, mechanical owl, 2 clocks (paired image), 2 underwater scenes (paired image),musical instruments scene (paired images), snails with houses (paired image), feathers (double page spread), fox (double page spread), an eagle (double page spread), horse (double page spread).
These illustrations are extremely detailed and complex containing an amazing amount of doodles, objects, plant life, animals and almost everything you can think of all mixed together. Kerby's illustrations are absolutely breathtaking.
Kerby's previous book Animorphia contained lots of suggestions to add your own artwork, this time around however there are only two illustrations which encourage doodling.
This book is honestly incredible. So detailed, beautiful and a really good example of how complex adult colouring can be.
The book is the same quality as the first - printed on both sides of quite good quality paper with some double sided illustrations. Again the book can be opened reasonably flat with work, and again some of the picture is lost into the spine: this is particularly annoying in some cases, for instance a double page butterfly that has its whole body in the spine. Coloured pencils work very well on the paper, but gel pens and fineliners bleed through the paper.
The illustrations are once again superb and thankfully this time there are only a couple that ask me to draw. The fine detail is not as tiny as in the first book, but this makes it easier to blend and layer the colours. Mr Rosanes imagination is wonderful and paired with his artistic talent has created fantastic pictures that transport me into a whole new world full of familiar but strangely different sights. I will never tire of colouring these pictures as all the time I am discovering little additions that I didn't notice at first. A truly stunning book giving hours of delight.
The paper is very good quality - it's easy to build up quite a few layers with my Polychromos pencils, and I've also used Derwent Inktense with no bleed through, I've used water and a Tombow colourless blender to activate the Inktense pencils - there's a very little (hardly noticeable) buckling using water, and no buckling at all using the Tonbow blender pen to activate the Inktense.
I've only had the book a short while, but I'm enjoying colouring it so much I've already finished a few of the pages. The only (small) niggle is the little ghost type figures & faces which have so far featured on every page - I think I'd have [referred it f these had been left out.
I'd really recommend this
A fantastically unique book - Possibly the best I have found :)
