The voice was my first draw to Lost Alone. I realise to some people it may seem like he had a cold when he recorded the lyrics but I think it's nice and distinctive. For me vocally it's different enough to warrant the same sort of response as when first hearing the Smashing Pumpkins or Placebo. Lost Alone are a breath of fresh air in a sea of sound a likes.

Musically its very enjoyable Alt rock, which we seem to have a lack of these days. Its stuff that you wouldn't mind filling up radio playlists and everyone will find something on here that draws them in.

Standout tracks include Love will eat you alive, Creatures and Orchestra of breathing which features minimum instrumentation that provides the perfect foundation for a powerful voice.

The bonus DVD has a making of documentary a nice addition and has some meat on it, it is just a shame that there is no extra live in the studio performance of the album.

I'm A UFO In This City - where to begin?

It's very much a musical journey from start to finish, taking you up with euphoric anthems, and crashing lows - then back again. LostAlone's style is very much centred on melody and tight harmonies between the group, and this sets them apart from their peers; no-one else sounds like these guys. Stand out tracks would be Orchestra of Breathing (builds up to an amazing finish), Vesuvius (builds up from an amazing start), We are the Archaeology of the Futures Past (a power anthem that screams out Queen influence, but considering Steven Battelle is a huge Queen fan this is no surprise).

Just as Standing on the Ruin of a Beautiful Empire (final track on their debut Say No to the World) hit the near 10 minute mark and was perfection, 6 minute The Downside of Heaven is the Upside of Hell is also a stand out track - at one point layering on and on to a single refrain for around three minutes flat, but it keeps you hooked.

Ideally you need to listen in track order and in its entirety - I was lucky enough to hear this debuted in December at one of their shows, and remember feeling like I'd been emotionally knocked for six when it was over. But in a good way.

If you only buy one album this year, I'm A UFO In This City needs to be it. Yes, there are another 10 months of the year to go, but nothing will come out to beat this.

* This version also comes with the documentary on the making of I'm A UFO In This City, which is very much worth watching as it demonstrates the level of work and attention put into creating the album.

It's really no often that a band can cite such diverse influences, and then back it up by producing an album within which are discernible notes of all of them. This album is a real treat for anyone who likes rock in any of it's forms, but especially those who like the richly layered vocals and soaring lead-guitar of Queen, or who appreciate a good, solid, ground-stomping riff played on guitar and bass in tandem. "Love Will Eat You Alive" is a finehold honed, highly melodic and masterfully delivered wall-of-sound experience, "Vesusius" is the kind of slow-starting epic that promises much with it's long, suspenseful intro and then OVER-delivers with an explosive guitar riff...to be honest there isn't a bad track anywhere on the CD.

Has a good sound - exciting. But then it all starts to sound a bit the same. Dodgey vocals don't help - too much shouting! Needs more light and shade.
