I was sorry to hear about Mr;. Iyengar's recent passing, but he has been my guru since the beginning. I needed to develop some flexibility for back problems that developed as the result of an accident eventually causing a slipped disk. Not only do I depend on my back for physical labor, but it got to a point where I could not sleep on a hard bed or a soft one.
Following a regiment of yoga postures or positions that I do in the morning to begin every day that focus on the back and other parts of the body, my back has strengthened; I am able to get a good night's sleep and so much more. After several years of a disciplined practice of yoga as illustrated by the photos in the book, I now use yoga to keep regular and to take an inventory of how my body is feeling every morning, of where any weakness resides. During the quiet of the yoga practice, I am able to prepare myself for the new day.
While the major work contained nearly 200 asanas illustrated, this book contains a subset of 57 asanas or key postures selected by Iyengar. The format for each asana is the same as in the older book, though I find that the 'effects' or benefits of each asana is clearly stated in separate paragraphs.
The last sections include the graded lessons for 35 week course ,leading to intermediate level, perhaps closely following a program that Iyengar may give in his institute .
There is an extensive glossary of terms for nearly 15 pages which is a welcome feature.
There is a listing of some of the addresses of "Iyengar yoga institutes" where his traditional style of yoga is taught.
Above all, the book has all the poses illustrated by Iyengar himself , as in the original version.
In all, this is a handy book for all yoga students and teachers, both for instruction and inspiration and should find a place in the book shelves of yoga lovers.
