A more considered collection of songs from the once kings of alt-grunge. This feels more like a 'proper' rock band with occassional asides to their grunge-smithery path, and is all the better for it as it seems the band are indeed progressing and not wallowing in triumphs passed. They also sound better and less angsty which is also a plus as by Chapter V they were starting to sound rather annoyed with themselves.

Not all tracks are good though. The opener, 'This is It' is ok but doesn't have much of an impact as an introduction to an album. 'The Way I Am' however makes good, as does 'Believe' as does 'Save Me'. The latter 2 are more akin to their 14 Shades of Grey material insomuch tha they are both slow and relatively introspective. But they are both still very good songs. 'All I Want' is the first truly excellent track however. It is an unashamed 'single' in its sound and construction but the chorus was made for greatness. 'Pardon Me' slows things down again but it is more of a hit and miss affair. 'Lost Along the Way' is one of my personal favourites. Fantastic chorus and overall a well crafted stadium ballad.

'Break Away' is heavy and angry and chugs along like they've done rarely in the past. It also gets stuck in your head and will need a couple of listens to truly appreciate. The same can be said of 'Tangled Up In You' but in a completely different way. It's a ballad but not a morose, 'whoa is me' type. It is uplifting and sparkly and quite beautiful. 'Raining Again' is middling but the chorus just about carries it above mediocre. 'Rainy Day Parade' is rather forgettable unfortunately. 'The Corner' is better but feels as though it also should have been slightly better than that.

Staind have consistenly delivered commercially sucessful albums, right from their early days as a nu metal band and now a radio friendly alternative/hard rock group.
Their latest offering, The Illusion of Progress, is no exception to this rule, it's not groundbreaking material, but it's what Staind have released rather sucessfully in the past.
Fans expecting a album like Dsyfunction or Tormented are advised to stay away, because any metal influences here are long gone, in fact I don't think Aaron Lewis screams once.
In fact, this is an album made up nearly entirely of power ballads, the best of which being "Believe" and "All I Want"
It's not exactly going to gain Staind a whole new generation of fans, but existing fans of Staind know exactly what to expect, and Staind don't often disappoint.

I'm a really late convert to Staind only discovering them at a Nickelback concert . I love Nickelback but the stars of the concert were Staind.
Since then I've brought all the CD's & haven't found a 'bad' one. The true measure for me of a band is whether you can listen to a CD without finding one track you don't like.
This is a great CD. A whole album of great lyrics that truly mean something supported by some really strong melody lines. That in itself is rare today but there is a 'rawness' about their songs that makes them stand out. No bending to commercial pressure here.
If you already are a Staind fan or have heard them before you'll know this is an incredible album so I don't need to encourage you to buy it.
If you are new to Staind or looking for one of those albums that will stay in your top 20 choices forever; this is one of those. This is not good music ; this is great music.

I first heard Outside and liked Staind. Mind you my CD got stolen and I didnt replace it so I didnt continue to follow Staind.
After buying this CD I realised what an amazing band they are purchased their 2 previous CDs which are heavier in sound.
Its a great CD from start to finish and stand out tracks include The way I am and This is it.
Staind go deeper than any band our there and its obvious life has thrown hard times at the singer.
Im into all sorts of music and was going to choose Razorlight as my album of 2008 untill I heard this.
At the end of the CD you get a treat as 3 acoustic tracks are added. They are all brilliant.
Do yourself a favour buy this CD and go for a drive. Staind are a brilliant band.

Staind are one of those bands who most remember for one or two songs and nothing more. I think this album will bring them back into the limelight. I have followed their career for the last 5 years and this album stands out as something refreshing, new and really rocking! Yes, I said rocking. Stand out tracks are 'The Way I am' and 'Believe'. Both show off Aaron's awesome voice and Staind's unique sound. This album is less about dirge and more about anthems. I heartily recommend it to both fans of old and those who haven't yet given Staind a chance. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
