This book took me completely by surprise. I wasn't expecting much at all but I ended up really, really enjoying it.

The opening is gripping and lets you know straight away that you are in for one hell of a ride. This is a very different take on the angel genre and I liked the spin. This book felt fresh and new. The storyline is ace; it was never boring and never slow. It had a couple of silly moments but those were few and far between and they didn't detract from the story at all.

The characters are awesome. Essallie is a great lead she can be tough and strong but she had weaknesses to which I like to see in my books as nobody is perfect. Kayden is brilliant I really liked him. you are never really sure what his motives are or what he is about, you know he is not a `good' guy but it is impossible to dislike him. There is a touch of romance here, a very small touch yet I found myself getting all worked up over it.

Illumine is one of the surprises of the year for me. it is short, exciting and engaging. I highly recommend it. I cannot wait to get stuck into the next book in the series.

An interesting and totally absorbing start to a series that promises great things. The story of Esselie finding out about her destiny and who and what she is has been well thought through and well written. I was a little disappointed with some of the editing but it did not detract from a thoroughly good read. Can't wait for the next book in the series as this could prove to be one of those series that will go from strength to strength.

Well worth a read........

Plot: 3/5 stars
I have, once again, stepped out of my comfort zone and read something I don't normally read. I have read and enjoyed YA before but only a select few: Harry Potter and Twilight, for example. I actually really enjoyed the plot but deducted two stars from this portion of the review for the following reasons: First, I felt like the plot was a sapling compared to what it could be. I saw so much potential in it that I ached for further development and, as a result, a thicker book. It felt very rushed like the author had a general idea but didn't let it marinade quite enough ... this plot is a fine wine that needed to age just a bit longer. The second star was deducted because, in the end, it seemed like more people in this story knew about the paranormal or were themselves paranormal than not. The main character became the lost puppy and everyone knew who and what she was except her. This works in a story like Harry Potter where the character is completely transported to a different culture but didn't work as well here.

Characters: 4/5 stars
The characters are unique from other books but had a tendency to share the same personality flaws which left them feeling a bit one note and lost this portion a star. It seemed like the females were all prone to sudden explosions of strong emotion and outburst while the males were generally level-headed, patient, calm, and endearing. Character development and individuality is, perhaps, one of the most difficult things for an author to achieve and this is something that, I think, will come with practice for this author.

Writing: 4/5 stars
~Narrative: When it comes to unique similes this author has a niche market all her own.

I won a copy of this book from the author in a competition a while ago, but have only now managed to get to read it. I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner!

Essallie is a normal teenager, or so she thinks. When her boyfriend is murdered, her world is turned upside down. Essallie is a confused teenager, who finds out that she is not normal. She is not as tough as some heroine characters I have read, but her strength is evident in her ability to resist Kayden, the demon conjured to kill her. However, I liked her character very much. She has a lot of spunk, and I am looking forward to watch her gain confidence in her abilities as the series continues.

Kayden is a demon summoned to kill Essallie. However, Kayden discovers that he is unable to touch Essallie. This makes him curious. He is an enigmatic character. Even though he's a demon, I found myself liking him. When he first meets Essallie, it isn't the most pleasant one, but it was sure memorable!
By the time I finished reading this book, I was actually routing for Kayden and Essallie! I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Obumbrate, to find out what will happen next!

Alivia Ander has written a very fast paced story that kept me turning the pages. I have read a lot of angel/demon books over the years, and I can definitely say that this book has a uniqueness to it that is refreshing. The first scene where Essallie and Kayden meet was quite disturbing and graphic, so if you are a bit squeamish, I wouldn't recommend this book. However, if you didn't read it, you would be missing out. This YA paranormal book is a fantastic read, and I highly recommend it if you love stories with action, adventure, angels and demons.
