Product Description

Review

Rosemary Sutcliff had the ability to make daunting historical fiction accessible to a young readership. In this retelling of Homer's Iliad, she retains all the excitement of the original ancient Greek story, with its colourful cast of Gods and heroes. The Iliad is not an easy book, with violent battle scenes and psychological drama, but there is enough magic and charm in the story to keep even the most faint-hearted reader enthralled. Sutcliff's version is an excellent introduction to the book and anyone who enjoys this would be well advised to pick up a copy of the same author's wonderful interpretation of Homer's Odyssey, The Wanderings of Odysseus, also published by Frances Lincoln.

(Carousel)

it is a superb retelling that matches in excitement any modern day stories. Alan Lee's delicate yet powerful illustrations are full of rich detail and convey the excitement of the tales. What better way to encourage children to love books than through great literature, vividly retold and beautifully illustrated? Frances Lincoln bring us some superlative retellings of myths and legends, always beautifully presented in books that are a joy to read and to treasure.’

(Parents in Touch)

‘It’s a summer of Classics for Frances Lincoln Children’s Books with a selection of well-known and popular classic stories re-told and illustrated by award-winning and respected authors and illustrators… '

(Armadillo Magazine)

’A stunningly illustrated edition of Homer’s classic adventure story which has been vibrantly retold by the late Rosemary Sutcliff who adds her own story-telling magic to Homer’s original'

This is supposed to be a ‘stunning edition’ of the classic and the ‘perfect gift’, but sadly the lack of attention given to basic editing of the text means this book is a big disappointment, particularly given that it's a new edition. There are numerous errors, for example, spelling mistakes, typographical and grammatical errors eg ‘toward thc ships’, ‘ofthe’.

Suitable for the older child, this volume has a slipcover and copiously illustrated text which makes a decent job of the classic story. Great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same text and illustrations as "Black Ships Before Troy" 20 May 2015
By Jennifer Schubert - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
If anyone is wondering, yes, this is the same text and illustrations as the no-longer-available hardcover and illustrated "Black Ships Before Troy," by the same author. (The paperback "Black Ships" does not have the illustrations.) Apparently the publisher just changed the name for the 2014 edition. Too bad, my son and I both liked the title and cover illustration of the older copy of "Black Ships Before Troy" that we got from the library. But I'm glad it is still available in some format!

5.0 out of 5 stars High-Lexile Book for Intermediate Grades 22 Jan. 2016
By Mischele M. Wilson - Published on Amazon.com

It's difficult to find higher-level Lexile books for my sixth grade students that are -well- appropriate for them to read and are interesting. This one fits the bill. I do a big mythology unit with all my students, and for the ones who want more when we finish, this book is perfect. I'm glad to have found Rosemary Sutcliff for my strong readers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Homer for preteens/teenagers 28 Aug. 2016
By Laurens Hamilton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I am a fan of this author/illustrator duo who did an adapted version of The Odyssey. I never read this Iliad version as a child. I read it as an adult and it was enjoyable and engaging. This text deftly retains all the plot points of the original, but removes some of the lengthier descriptions of various people's armor or very lengthy mourning rituals. There is some violent content here (hey, it's about a war), but violence is a part of the history of the world as well as literature.
