Brilliant book! Read it in two days because i found it so hard to put it down. A real page turner. The timing is very good and takes in a range of years very well. Loved how it all linked well together. Highly recommend Anne Bennett as a author as i have read one other of her books and will defiantly be buying more!

excellently written and a very moving story of the 30's era. would recommend it. I couldn't put it down. It was a great insight into the lives of young people in service and the people they worked for, as well as such determination of people in poverty who made something of their lives.

I really enjoyed reading this story and loved the characters but unfortunately for me there was a little too much history in it, I had to skip the war history towards the end to get to the story. Being a nurse myself I really enjoyed reading about nursing during the war.

"If You Were The Only Girl" by Anne Bennett is a great book. As before, Ms. Bennett gives the reader great characters and great and rich storyline. Any fan of wartime books don't want to miss a book by Anne Bennett

I have not enjoyed reading a book this much for a very long time. The book is so well written, I feel like I actually know the characters, especially, Lucy, whose life the story follows. Her life in Ireland before moving to Birmingham. And how her life changed with the onset of war. I can not recommend this book enough.

In my opinion this is one of the best of Anne Bennett's books so far. I enjoyed this because the heroine took her life in her own hands and fought back against poverty and discrimination. So well done to the author. I am gradually reading through Anne's books and will no doubt read them all in time.
