Let me just start off by saying that I think this has to be the best book Rachel Brimble has written. I love all her books to date but my goodness she has totally excelled herself with If I Want You. The action begins immediately and the reader is thrown straight into the drama from the opening pages with barely time to come up for air. The story is both exciting and suspenseful and if its edge of your seat you want then you have it in this book. Add to that the romantic, sexy and 'oh dear me pass me something to waft myself with' moments then this book certainly has it all. The sexual attraction jumps off the pages!
Rachel Brimble has created such brilliant characters. Tori Peterson might have suffered a horrific experience as a child but she's quite tough, not taking no for an answer. She does not suffer fools gladly and is determined to use her job as a journalist to get things done rather than wait around for the police. But, under her hard exterior she's still that little girl crying for her parents and wanting to be safe. Mark Bolton recognises this vulnerability and not only does he want to protect Tori, he also wants to love her. He too tries to keep his fears and vulnerable side hidden and at the heart of it, he and Tori are more alike than either would care to admit. And, in true suspense fashion, Rachel Brimble has crafted the perfect psycho baddie! Love it! A few shocking OMG moments too! I really can't think of anything negative to say about this book. Get out there and buy it! Its on my list of highly recommended reads.
Tori is closer to this than many would realise having been abducted as a little girl herself, and a parent from the school Mark becomes her only ally as she digs deeper and finds the connections that lead right back to her.
I loved Tori, her gumption, her unwillingness to just leave things alone. I hated how much pain she was in, how her own abduction had left her damaged and afraid. I loved how Mark saw all of these things in her, he instinctively knew how to be with her, how far to push her, when to pull her in, when to love her, how to love her. I loved that his daughter seemed to instinctively see and know these things in both of them. She was a very clever kid, probably the wisest character in the book.
The twists and turns in this book were mind blowing, I did suspect the person who turned out to be the abductor but dismissed them about five times telling myself I was being ridiculous. See always trust your instincts, Claire!
Overall, this was a strong, tense, and at times bloody hard to read book, but Mark and Tori are just such a wonderful couple I just wish they could have met walking the dog or something!
A huge thank you to Rachel Brimble and The Wild Rose Press for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this book.
Because of what Tori discovers she gets the feeling the abduction wasn't random. There are similarities with the situation she was in many years ago. Memories of the past come to the surface and Tori has to deal with the horrible captor who took away her childhood all over again. Will she be strong enough to deal with the kidnapper and will the missing girl be found? While Tori is looking for clues together with Mark they become closer, but it isn't the right time for love, or is it?
If I Want You is a gripping romantic story. Tori doesn't trust easily. The memories of the past are still making life difficult for her and she thinks she'll never experience the happiness a lot of other people seem to find so easily. My heart ached for Tori and everything she had to go through and I kept hoping better days would come for her. First she has a case to solve though and the search for the missing girl kept me on the edge of my seat. Rachel Brimble combines mystery with romance in a great way and I flew through the pages of her story.
Rachel Brimble has a fabulous compelling writing style. She describes what her main characters are going through in a vivid and sympathetic way. I could easily understand everything Mark and Tori were feeling. They are on a mission and are trying to dig up as much information as they can, but they are also allowing themselves to go through the many different emotions involved in such a hard situation. I was curious to find out more about the case, but also about their relationship. There are clues, combined with sparks and deep moving scenes. If I Want You is a versatile story and I absolutely loved this captivating book.
