Any fans of The Idler (Tom Hogkinson) will be familiar with some of the ground covered in this fine first volume from members of the Idle Foundation. It would be wrong to assume therefore that one has little new to learn. This volume is funny in places and always entertaining though the humour when it comes cannot disguise the well articulated objections to the oppressive world of work as it is inflicted on so many people to the detriment of their health and wellbeing.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of having the callous assumptions by which our society is regulated passionately dissected and found to be false constructs it is probably best to think carefully before reading it as it could well disturb your day. Though you might be just the person who needs to read it.

If on the other hand you are in some way dissatisfied and have discovered that the promises of a career, if your employment can be graced with that term, have been broken, buy with confidence. The contributors all have powerful thoughts about what has gone wrong in society generally and in some cases with their own lives. They go on to explain how they have sought to regain, not without difficulty, personal independence.

Great value and a cracking read I finished it in two sessions.

This book has something for everyone. Whether you dream of chucking that overstressed lifestyle and retreating to a smallholding and doing your own good life thing. Or just knowing there are alternatives to the long hour culture that the modern world runs by. Personal stories form those who have cried no more! Different people, different stories, from those who made a simpler life happen for them.

Idling is for everyone is a wonderful collection of writing, art and poetry that cocks a snoot at 'the man', whilst helping readers to look at different ways of living. Idling is not about laziness, but about finding ways to live your life to the fullest. A must read for anyone who feels trapped by modern society - there is another way!

This book is not quite a book, and perhaps it can be better understood as continuing a much earlier tradition of polemical pamphlets and tracts which tended to critique British society, cocking a snook at the self-appointed guardians of our moral wellbeing.

It holds up a light to the inevitable negative backwash of modern Capitalism without being overtly political or proselytising; and while it contains genuine wit and wisdom, bubbling beneath the humour there is more than a hint that modern society has got things hopelessly wrong. It is not hard to find evidence of this wrongness all around us: just watch the news!

While the book is clearly the product of more than one author, it is none the worse for that. Here you will find essays, poems and cartoons. Here you will find tactile tendrils of humanity, pushing through the dark loam of consciousness, searching for some much needed light.

If you are looking for a less-travelled path through the maze of this life you would do well to read 'Idling Is For Everyone' and decide for yourself if that journey is worth its weight in beer bottles.
