First off – I’ve never read a book quite like this. Told from the perspective of the Devil (though she doesn’t like this term) as she delicately influences the lives of a young family. She’s not here to cause pain or suffering, she tells us, she actually wants the opposite. She wants people to indulge in the delights of the flesh, to live in the present. The suffering that may occur as a result, is not her concern.
Idle hands feels like a fresh, new read: the descriptions are beautiful and tightly-woven, the interspersed narration never feels like it detracts from the story and the characterisation is purposeful, with each member of the family serving a distinctive role in driving the plot forwards.
Cassondra obviously has a great handle on her craft, and she grasps this handle not with idle hands, but with the hands of a great, modern writer. I look forward to delving into her future works.
