Product Description

Purpose of a docking station for HDDs is the frequent and fast change of those. Nothing may jam, get stuck or be frail. This applies even for the 100th or 1000th change. The IB-111 comes with the best qualifications: first of all the solid aluminium case.

Good point is that USB 3.0 + SATA is as fast as a drive on an internal controller.
Very useful if you use a bare drive for backup or want to clone partitions etc.
Minus point is that there is no physical support for the drive, so it feels a little flimsy, also supplied usb 3.0 lead is rather short so I had to get a longer oneStarTech 6 feet SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Cable A to B - M/M

Do not use this dock with a 3TB hard drive, it can at worst break the HDD, it is designed only for use with up to 2TB hard drives. I found this out the hard way breaking a Hitachi 3TB drive that was put into the dock which somehow managed to corrupt the drive and is no longer recognised by any bios/uefi motherboard, it was my own fault as I just assumed it would work and the info that this only works with 2TB drives is buried away in the on the Icybox website which I should have looked at first.

The drive does work fine with anything at or below 2TB.

Have tested it with 4 different HDDs, works ok.

Advantages:
- you can swap HDDs like Nintendo games, without using screwdrivers and headaches
- it can fit 2.5 as well as 3.5 inch HDDs
- it has USB 3.0 speeds

Couple of minuses:
- USB 3.0 cable is way too short, need to keep it right behind my MBP
- Power off button is mechanical (could have had a digital one), that when you press it, it suddenly takes all power from your hdd, making it sound like it shouldn't. You have to first eject it from your computer, then detach USB cable, and after a few seconds pull the power off, otherwise it sounds like you might damage the hdd. This might be hot-swappable, but as I care for the data on my HDDs, I wouldn't use it anyway.

Had this brilliant little dock for just a day and Im already loving it! So simple to set up and drivers are found instantly (Windows 7). It looks great and takes up hardly any space on my desk.

As an IT Technician, simple, easy to use solutions are always needed which the Icy Box dock does. Its great for quickly formatting hard drives and also for data recovery.

The USB 3.0 is lightening fast, even running at USB 2.0 speeds!

I would reccomend you purchase this dock, and also this USB 3.0 PCIe card if you do not have any USB 3.0 ports already as it adds even more functionality to your computer for just a tenner!: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004S0Y9FK/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

Cannot recommend this product highly enough! 10/10

great product, great flexibility. I use it for data recovery and have number of 2.5" and 3.5" backup hard drives I use it with.
Speed is also good over USB 3.0 if your computer supports it.

Great transfer speeds (much faster than my old USB 2 external drive) even though all of the external drives i'm using are the 'Green' versions (WD20EARS, WD500AADS and WD15EARS) No problems hooking it up to my XPS 17 (despite porblems i've heard about with the laptop) and is much more economic than buying a set of external usb 3 drives.

Also it's incredibly useful to be able to hot swap the drives as i use the 2tb as a complete backup of the 500gb and the 1tb - i know i may be being cautious but i've spent years collecting photos and music!

Highly recommended.

The Icy Box has been a saviour. Its allowed me to save files from broken systems by simply plugging the drives in to it and powering it on. It really is that simple. It comes supplied with an eSATA and USB cable, as well as a power supply. I used the eSATA on my laptop and the transfer speeds were very fast as expected. When my laptop died, I removed the disk and slotted in to the Icy Box, connected via USB to a desktop computer running Windows 7 64bit, seamless as ever. The transfer speeds were very impressive too, from the drive in the IcyBox to my WD USB drive, getting speeds around 18MB/s. If you have a collection of 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives, or need to rescue data from one, then you can't go far wrong with the Icy Box.

BOTTOM LINE
Some weaknesses (see details below) but it has been useful. I have used it to access three or four different 2.5 inch hard disks and one 3.5 inch disk and, so far, all have performed correctly.

DETAILS
Bare disks seem to fit nicely. Disks that have been removed from laptops often have extra shells and padding around them and this might need to be removed to allow the disk to be inserted easily into this docking station.

There is a blue lamp on the front of the unit but this only illuminates when the unit is powered AND is connected to a USB port, which means that if the unit is not connected to a USB port there is no visual indication that it is powered which, in turn, increases the risk of me performing a hot-insertion or hot-extraction and damaging a disk.

The unit is reasonably heavy and has a rubber-like base, so it has had little inclination to slide from the work-top.

There is a flap that is supposed to cover part of the disk socket when a 2.5 inch disk is inserted (the flap is pushed out of the way completely by 3.5 inch disks). This flap can get stuck in its lowered position and when that happens it offers no support at all to 2.5 inch disks. In actual use, if the ICY box isn't moved around then the disks seem to stand acceptably firmly using only the connectors for support.
