As you've probably spotted, Albert Collins' catalogue is littered with references to the word "ice". That's because Collins was The Iceman - in other words, as cool as you could get.

If that's a lofty claim, then "Ice Pickin'" is a strong enough testament to back it up. Backed by a wonderfully tight, but subtly laid back band, they proved an excellent platform upon which Collins could just go off and do his thing - which was to play absolutely blistering Telecaster lead over the grooviest of backing.

What's a particular delight is to hear, and is in fact most noticeable when listening on headphones, are the grunts, squeals and exclamations Collins makes as he fires off another solo. Like a tennis player grunting as they thwack the ball, Collins new how best to fire off a stinging riff or two.

And on this album he had the songs to back it up; "Too Tired", "Honey Hush", "Mastercharge" are all excellent tunes, as is the instrumental "Avalanche". It's a wonderful set that really swings, as all great blues should.

This 1978 release is the 6th studio album from the coolest ice picker of them all, Albert Collins, and his first for Alligator records, THE blues label of the `70s and `80s.

Collins had a totally unique style that served him well throughout his recording career. At the heart of it was his unusually tuned guitar and the way he would pluck at the strings with his thumb and forefinger, eschewing a pick, and creating a sharp, clear, aggressive sound. He put this basic sound at the heart of a series of tracks that combined blues with a strong funky soul element (amplified by the use of horns and bass) and quite often a strong sense of humour.

Collins was a showman first and foremost, always finding new ways to surprise, amaze and entertain the audience. From this comes his desire to show off what he can do with the guitar, and his singing style which has a story telling quality and a sense of humour. This album shows off all these elements, with track after track of great funky blues as he tells stories of his trials and tribulations with his credit card company and his high spending wife. It's classic stuff, and probably my favourite of his albums.

An excellent buy for all those interested in blues. It's different from the usual blues music that you are probably familiar with, but all the better for it.

Albert Collins is the ultimate urban blues man. He's cool, but he's got bills to pay. His argumentative wife don't help none neither, she's busy running up huge debts on the credit cards, that's when she not out all hours partying with her friends. This and much more is the stuff of Collins material. Its the blues as experienced by the working man. But you know what? - despite everything, Albert is going to survive- he's lived through the bad times and no doubt will again, but when he's down, you can be sure he'll be up again. Like his 'sting like a bee' guitar playing, Albert is irrepressible.

On this album you'll hear Albert near or at his funky good humoured best. You can tell that he and his band have been refining the material on the road- there is a lived in, honed and very direct approach to the tunes that leaves no room for fat. This music is all about feeling and groove. Listen to the heart rending 'When The Welfare Turns Its Back On You'- a guitar and vocal tour de force that lets you know just what it means to have reached the bottom. Alternatively dial up the final track 'Avalanche ' to hear one of Albert's patent instrumentals- biting sharp tone and a seeming endless inventiveness in the licks department make for a performance to treasure.

'Ice Pickin' is an excellent blues album. Great tunes, top band, and of course the presence of one of the most capable and charismatic blues men to have plugged into an amp, make this CD a 'must purchase'.
