Whew! If you thought Jodeci and Dru Hill were the masters of putting sex into soul, think again. The Time are anything but subtle: there are tracks laced with heavy breathing, words like "straddle" and lines like "I wanna get you off, baby" are commonplace, and they're completed with a sultry style of soul that is equally as enticing in its uptempo forms (the very '80s-sounding "Jungle Love," "My Drawers") as it is in slow doses (the raw "Chili Sauce" and "If the Kid Can't Make You Come"). Even the more mellow, midtempo funk like "Ice Cream Castles" is addictive. The Time make you realize there's more to old-school funk than just George Clinton and Parliament. --Rebecca Wallwork

Being a huge fan of The Time, who I first encountered through a Prince obsessed mate back in the very early 80s, I sought out all of their then available recordings. I had The Time and What Time Is It on vinyl and, even to this day, can't get enough of the solid grooves on both records (I have them on cd now though). Then in 1984, they dropped a new LP with a new line up. Oh wow I thought, they have both songs from Purple Rain on it. I rushed out to buy it and was rather disappointed with the end result. While 'The Bird' is the actual live version that was performed in the movie, my personal fave 'Jungle Love' is a slightly slower, less appealing studio recording that doesn't do the song justice at all. The original concert that both live versions were taken from in the movie is available as an excellent quality bootleg release, listening to the two versions of Jungle Love show how much faster and thoroughly funkier the live version really is. If it was this one that was put on the LP, this would be my fave Time album but sadly no, the only other good song apart from 'The Bird' is 'Ice Cream Castles' but once again, the live version is a stone groove compared to the quite tepid studio mix.The rest of the 3 songs are just filler material in my opinon and not very good.
I would only get this LP if you are a fan of the band or a Minneapolis Sound completist, if you want the vastly superior concert recordings of the Purple Rain songs, seek that out online, you should find it no bother.

I know what the other reviewer means about the production not been as good as the songs in Purple Rain. I still love this album though. The 80s production is part of the fun for me. This album is hillarious and too funky! My only complaint is it's too short. JUNGLE LOVE!

....then you should get this album. It's funny, funky and soulful. 'Jungle Love' is a true Time classic, and for me the resnt of the album stands up to being a thoroughly good listen.

Gotta love The Time. Morris Day is a fantastically camp front man.
