Product Description

'This well-selected and finely printed presentation - much of it in colour - of poems, short stories, and photographs of non-printed materials is by far the fullest, most attractive and most persuasive account given to date of Finlay's many-faceted achievement.' --Times Literary Supplement

'It is good to see as intelligent a book as this being combined with a format which does its subject the honour due to him, but above all, this is a book which sets out to help the reader to understand an artist who requires thoughtful, unbiased contemplation.' --Books in Scotland

'Ian Hamilton Finlay is one of the most diversely and richly talented visual artists living today . . . This handsomely produced book describes and illustrates [his] whole artistic career, of which his remarkable garden must be seen as the finest flower.' --The World of Interiors

'Yvres Abrioux's analysis of a whole range of issues raised by Finlay's work is clear and penetrating.'

About the Author

The French critic Yves Abrioux has written extensively on Finlay's work in articles and exhibition catalogues.

This is still the only book coving the full range of Ian Hamilton Finley's work and I am delighted to own a copy of it at last. There are a couple of excellent books on his garden at Little Sparta, but neither of these touch upon his galley based work, writings or artists books. A word of warning though. ONLY buy a first edition, if you can find it. (this has a different cover to the one illustrated here.) The second edition seems to only be available as a print on demand book and the quality is very poor, no better than photocopied.

Be careful that you get what you pay for. I ordered this item (2nd edition, 1994) and got a Print-On-Demand black-and-white reprint. The real second edition is very well printed in colour.

HASH(0x9cd2ef90) out of 5 stars Finlay's work is subtle, political, and varied. ... 22 Sept. 2014

Finlay's work is subtle, political, and varied. This book offers a "Finlay" perspective on the world. Drawn from nautical symbols, military history, and an emphasis on Scottish politics on the 1970's and 1980's, this work's mediums (gardens, print, concrete poetry, sculpture) are the means of a perspective on the world that is at once fanciful and fierce.

HASH(0x9ccb1540) out of 5 stars Buy the hardcover—paperback is terrible quality 1 April 2015

Softcover: This could be a good book, but the production quality is so poor it's pathetic—no better than a homemade xerox. Only black and white images on thin paper with banding through all the images like inkjets gone dry. Even the text looks like it was copied rather than printed.

I returned the softcover version and bought a used hardcover version elsewhere and it's a fine book. They shouldn't be sold on the same page since the description is totally off.
