Now to be fair, while this album is by far their worst, that doesn't mean it's a bad album. The song writing & musicianship is still very good & there are a couple of crackers on the album. The big problem for me is that it's just so middle of the road and mainstream. Dallas Taylor's formidable screams are all gone & been replaced with a much more tuneful vocal style. Not a bad thing in itself, but consider that they only have one guitarist now so a lot of the musical power has now gone. Those two facts combined have resulted in a much poppier, straight ahead rock album. Anyone expecting another Never Cross A Trowel, Wylie or Step Up will be left a bit disapointed. It's not all bad though. The southern vibe is still there and the awesome track Cat's Eye remind me of early Maylene in attitude. Off To The Laughing place is reminicent of the closing tracks of the previous albums.
So, in summary, quite an enjoyable album but very middle of the road and certainly not up to the standard you'd expect from these guys. Hopefully thier next album will be a bit more ballsy again!
In the bands three previous albums we saw a heavier edge but it was hardly death metal we were listening too, dallas is perhaps too good a singer just to scream his lips off but perhaps this album could have done with one outright stonking heavy track, but thats nit picking on my part.
