I am very pleased to conclude that within minutes of receiving the kit, I've managed to connect all 3 hard drives (one at the time!) without any problems and then managed to easily copy all data onto my Windows XP laptop. There was no driver to install for XP, I've just wired the hard drive to the right end of the connector (and for the 3.5" HD also connected the power supply) and then just plugged in the USB end of the cable in my laptop's USB connector. The hard drive got automatically detected and appeared on the list of my laptop's disks with all its windows partitions just as any other internal drive would. When copying large directories, subjective data transfer speed felt very fast, just as if I was using the internal hard drive. This is probably due to USB 2.0.
Overall a great product for recovering data from hard drives when your PC, laptop or external hard drive box dies. Also great supplier, good communication, rapid delivery, no complains, a very happy customer!
I got it all lit up and ready to search with the drive whirring indicating it had started up, and when I wanted explore the drive it just showed as Removable Disk (K): but Windows XP refused to read it. After a long wait and blue lights flashing on the cable-socket, a message came up with "Failed to connect to IDE device. I/O Device communication error" or words to that effect.
I tried various configurations of USB ports plugging it into others in case my initial one wasn't USB-2 and again it got stuck and failed to enter the root of the Hard Drive.
The Western Digital Drive was working perfectly when I removed it from an old computer.
As a last ditch attempt to get into the HD I tried plugging the USB cable into a Macbook Laptop computer USB socket.
That too said it couldn't recognise it as a compatible drive to explore.
Windows didn't even offer me the option to Format and wipe the drive so I had to admit defeat and sadly have bought an item that can't do the job I expected. So I don't know about anyone else's experience with this cable set, so I could only speak as I find, and give it just 2 stars. It was for me, a waste of money.
The instructions aren't particularly clear (e.g. where the separate power supply connects, or how to check the orientation of the pins) but it is common sense when you look at all the connections.
Transfer speeds are ok, running around 15mbps on average.
Shame there isn't a USB 3.0 version to speed things up.

I honestly don't know what to say about this product. It powers up my hard drive, it spins, it sounds healthy, but it just 100% will not connect to my computer. Read morePublished 2 days ago by michaelmccrackle

Works well on IDE disk , but having problems with reading a SATA disk. Perhaps this is to do with the XP system the disk came from. Read morePublished 2 months ago by G. A. Kerr
