I bought this kit hoping to recover data from 3 hard drives extracted from my broken PC and a laptop (2.5" and 3.5" IDE drives, sizes from 80GB to 250GB). I was not sure what to expect as for some other similar products on Amazon reviewers complained of power supply problems and hard drive incompatibility.

I am very pleased to conclude that within minutes of receiving the kit, I've managed to connect all 3 hard drives (one at the time!) without any problems and then managed to easily copy all data onto my Windows XP laptop. There was no driver to install for XP, I've just wired the hard drive to the right end of the connector (and for the 3.5" HD also connected the power supply) and then just plugged in the USB end of the cable in my laptop's USB connector. The hard drive got automatically detected and appeared on the list of my laptop's disks with all its windows partitions just as any other internal drive would. When copying large directories, subjective data transfer speed felt very fast, just as if I was using the internal hard drive. This is probably due to USB 2.0.

Overall a great product for recovering data from hard drives when your PC, laptop or external hard drive box dies. Also great supplier, good communication, rapid delivery, no complains, a very happy customer!

Extremely handy piece of kit at an affordable price. Easily transferring old drives to new PC's and enabling seemless viewing of old drives before transfer. Also works for notebook/laptop drives.

Sadly this item failed to solve my problem. It was what I'd been advised to get, to access an older drive recently removed from an old PC. Though all the adapters plugs and cables that came with the kit were compatible with the Hard Drive I wanted to access, and I coped with the less the good instructions, it simply didn't give me access to the drive I was trying to extract data from.

I got it all lit up and ready to search with the drive whirring indicating it had started up, and when I wanted explore the drive it just showed as Removable Disk (K): but Windows XP refused to read it. After a long wait and blue lights flashing on the cable-socket, a message came up with "Failed to connect to IDE device. I/O Device communication error" or words to that effect.

I tried various configurations of USB ports plugging it into others in case my initial one wasn't USB-2 and again it got stuck and failed to enter the root of the Hard Drive.

The Western Digital Drive was working perfectly when I removed it from an old computer.
As a last ditch attempt to get into the HD I tried plugging the USB cable into a Macbook Laptop computer USB socket.
That too said it couldn't recognise it as a compatible drive to explore.

Windows didn't even offer me the option to Format and wipe the drive so I had to admit defeat and sadly have bought an item that can't do the job I expected. So I don't know about anyone else's experience with this cable set, so I could only speak as I find, and give it just 2 stars. It was for me, a waste of money.

Great bit of kit... got one as I have 7 dead laptops spanning 13 years of ownership. Have now taken the Harddrives out of them all and using this, extracted everything I wanted onto a backup disk.
The instructions aren't particularly clear (e.g. where the separate power supply connects, or how to check the orientation of the pins) but it is common sense when you look at all the connections.
Transfer speeds are ok, running around 15mbps on average.
Shame there isn't a USB 3.0 version to speed things up.

Just what i needed. I use to have a lot of internal hard drives that i needed to retrieve the data off. This was quick and easy to use and saved me a lot of hassle having to redo the data that was on the drive.

Excellent piece of equiptment, did exactley what I purchased it for, so easy to connect up and saves a lot of time installing drives to check their contents, I reccomend this model because of the power unit, which I found most important to have, saves a lot of time sorting the power problem for the drives
