In terms of the unit itself, this is basically a networked automation server that also speaks X10.
You put this on your network (Ethernet, no WiFi), plug into power socket, and then configure by App (I used iPad and iPhone).
In fact, the PC (Windows) software from their site seems to be secondary to this device. While the mobile Apps allowed you to configure devices/rooms etc, with setting syncing between devices, the PC version did not 'sync'. You have to separately set-up devices etc to control. I would have expected something more integrated between the PC and Mobile software, but I suppose for a PC-less automation solution I can live with that. Maybe it's just not intuitive how to sync to the PC.
In terms of the hub (small unit with power and network cable), and more importantly how it control devices, this works great. I added my X10 devices, coded in the new Insteon switches, and was up an running in no time. The Insteon switches respond MUCH faster and quieter, and there is live status in the app. So on that front, full marks (more on the review of them on their own product page). I was pleased there was no power brick, and the device stays pretty cool.
As for the mobile Apps (iOS, Android), I could work those without instruction quite fine, so I think it passes the usability test.Read more ›
However, it is worth noting that X10 module support is limited to basic manual control of modules, only one automatic timer On/Off schedule per day, and X10 commands cannot be included within the App "Scenes". These limitations do not apply to Insteon modules.
The Schedule feature can set an On or Off event to occur at Sunrise or Sunset, which is handy but it would be even better if the event could be offset by some minutes to just before or after.
IT DOES NOT WORK at all well.
Huge delays in operatinng any scene which has more than one device in it!
Which kinda defeats the object.
My 'scheduled' scenes, operating several devices in concert...all too over an hour to complete their schedule.
It is awful as a hub controller.
Moreover IT DOES NOT AND CANNOT WORK WITH ALEXA OR ECHO.
I was told that it would on all all the reviews. IT DOES NOT WORK
I bought it and realised that this product is not compatible with the echo (which i then solved and made it compatible using alot of hard thought research on github as i have good experience in coding and general techno). I used the HA bridge -java kits.
In terms of syncing with insteon products its not that great and not extremely responsive. Make sure that it is not connected to a surge protected outlet and is connected directly into the socket. Also the micro on/off module is a pain to make it sync as they are very sensitive and may different sorts of interferences and will prob give you a 25% chance of working. The plug in modules work great.
So this is a good product for very basic home automation but do not consider it to make your house a "smarthome"
