Setting up is very simple, just make sure the unit is fully charged, put the batteries in the remote control, and it is ready to roll. Charging can be via the docking station or alternatively the charger can be connected direct to the unit itself. A full charge takes about four hours or so, and should give up to a couple of hours of cleaning time.
For normal cleaning, it can be started manually by simply pressing the CLEAN button, either on the remote control or on the unit itself. Alternatively, it can be programmed via the remote control to start cleaning at a fixed time – this will repeat daily until cancelled.
Using it manually, as soon as the CLEAN button is pressed the unit backs away from the charging dock, turns itself round and sets off on its travels. The noise levels are reasonable, think of a fairly quiet hair dryer. I don’t pretend to understand how, but somehow the unit manages to find its way around the room, using a series of sensors that tell it when it is about to bump into something. It does seem fairly random initially but after a while a pattern does emerge. It does not clean right up to the edge in this mode, but there is an EDGE mode that can be selected to do this, also a SPOT mode for repeated cleaning of a small area.
The cleaning process uses two contra rotating brushes either side of the front of the unit, which direct dust etc towards the suction inlet, and it then ends up in the small dust container. This is only 0.3 litre in size so does need to be emptied regularly. There is also a removable microfibre cloth that clips onto the base of the unit for hard floors.
We tested the unit out on a carpeted room that had been cleaned the previous day with a Dyson, and after half an hour it was surprising how much dust it had found. Because of its low profile, the unit is able to clean underneath low furniture where a conventional vacuum cleaner will not go, but we did find that it does not seem aware of how much headroom it has, so it did get stuck under a sofa for a minute or so, although it did manage to find its way back out again. You also have to make sure there are no loose flexes on the floor, as the wheels can get caught up in them.
We then tried it in a bedroom, where it is almost impossible to clean properly under the bed by conventional means, without moving the very heavy bed each time. I am ashamed to say that the amount of dust that it collected was quite revealing, I have included a photo if you can stomach it!
Once the unit has finished, or if the batteries start to run low, it stops the cleaning mode and coasts back to the charging dock to recharge itself. There is also a HOME button to send it back at any time.
I have included a video that shows the unit starting off, cleaning, and then returning to the charging dock. There is also a selection of photos.
I am very impressed with this machine, it is very solidly made and quite heavy, and does work very efficiently. It would never replace a conventional vacuum cleaner but for regular interim cleaning it does have its place, and it is very good at getting into confined spaces. The idea of course is that you program it to clean when you are out, or not using a room, but to be honest it is so fascinating to watch it in action that we find ourselves staying in the room to see what it does!
Thanks for reading this review; I hope it has been helpful.
The controls are simple to use and is generally all done via the remote control. The remote has buttons for setting the current time of day as well as setting the cleaning schedule which is very easy to do.
It also has a single one-touch clean button which will cause the robot to leave its dock and continuously clean the room until its battery is low enough for it to then start to make its own way back home to its dock to charge again.
The other buttons include an 'edge cleaning' mode where the robot will follow all edges of the room, a circular 'on the spot' clean where the robot will spin in a spiral cleaning motion and a 'go home' button. There are also direction buttons for you to drive the robot around manually if required.
The bag capacity is big enough for about a week's worth of cleaning (mileage may vary).
The robot comes with a variety of spare parts which look easy enough to change.
It is clever enough to detect and avoid large objects which it uses to easily navigate around corners. It also has the ability to detect stairs so that it does not fall down them. We have had the odd issue with the robot getting stuck on objects laying around and has even been known to scatter our post (letters and parcels!) across the floor.
I am really pleased with this little device, it always keeps us entertained when it turns itself on at its scheduled time and it does a good job at keeping our floor clean.
With thanks to the manufacturer for the sample product, sent for review purposes.
It comes with its own docking station which you need to plug in and keep powered up. This is the robots base and it returns to it automatically when its battery is running low. It takes a good 4 hours to charge fully and this will give you up to 2 hours of cleaning time. It works well on flat carpets, on hardwood flooring or vinyl, but I wouldn’t recommend it for very deep pile carpets.
The remote control is how you program the robot’s cleaning schedule or make it clean on manual control as you direct it. The robot can be made to clean the floor at a set time every day, maybe while you are still in bed early in the morning allowing you to come down to a clean floor. Alternatively, it could be set to clean while you are at work and all this is set on the remote which is easy to do following the instructions in the manual. Other than the scheduling and ‘clean’ there are 3 other main buttons on the remote. The ‘home’ button returns the robot to its base when pressed. Then there is a clean around the ‘edges’ of the room button and a ‘spot’ clean button, which repeatedly cleans a small area. The remote control requires 2 x AAA type batteries which are supplied.
The dust collector isn’t very big and is reached by clicking the top and the lid opens giving you access. It is a basically a plastic box with dust filters and it’s very easy to empty and keep clean. The robot comes with a few spares and you can also purchase items like filters on-line at a reasonable price.
In summary, I have found testing this robotic cleaner fascinating and entertaining. It does the job reasonably quietly and keeps at it for an hour or so until its battery runs low and it trundles back to its base. It does collect dirt and dust as you would hope and the robot itself is made of hard shiny white plastic that is easy to keep clean. I really love this thing and would like to give it 5/5 stars, but it does get itself stuck a few times on any wires or low bases and sometimes in tight corners. Which means I’ll give it 4.5/5 stars, but round it up to five stars on my review. If you have the budget and rooms with a fairly simple layout then this is worth the price.
