iRig - Plug in and play simplicity

The new iRig interface adapter is the easiest way to get your instrument's signal into iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. It features a standard 1/4" instrument jack, a standard 1/8" (3.5mm) headphone out jack, and the iOS standard 1/8" TRRS jack for input on your iOS device. All you have to do is make your connections, then launch AmpliTube iOS or your favorite guitar/recording app and you're ready to go. Now for the hidden features… if you have a newer Mac computer, you can use the iRig as an audio interface for it. The newer Mac models feature a headphone jack that acts as a headphone/microphone input for headsets. This means that you can also use your iRig with your Mac laptop or desktop machine to take advantage of the higher processing power of your machine and you don't need an additional audio interface to use it. Simply plug the iRig into your headphone jack, plug your headphones/line out into your iRig and you've got a fully functioning audio interface for guitar/bass/keyboards, or any other instrument with a 1/4" out. Pretty cool.

AmpliTube, AmpliTube Fender and AmpliTube Slash for iOS

Click on a stompbox module slot and you can add a stompbox effect to your signal chain. There's a small navigation list of available effects directly under the navigation bar. Simply click on an effect name to load it into the slot. Swipe left and right to access all the available stompbox effects in your app. The signal flows from left to right and you can reposition effects in the chain to experiment with different textures and sounds. You get three stompbox slots daisy-chained together to add your favorite effects. You can turn on/off individual stompboxes simply by clicking the pedal button.

Now for the good stuff. Download the AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE or AmpliTube Slash app from the iTunes App store. Plug in your guitar and headphones via the iRig and launch the app. Immediately you'll see something very familiar - a complete rig. AmpliTube iOS recreates your entire guitar/bass signal chain in your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. At the top of the screen, you'll see the navigation bar for your rig. This is where you select the module to modify.

Next up is the Amp section with cabinet and microphone. Simply click that slot, and you can choose with ease different amplifiers from your collection. Changing a speaker cabinet is as simple as touching it on the screen, same goes for the microphone. Tap once to change to the next speaker configuration in the list and demo the sound. Easy, huh? (You can also bypass the Amp module by clicking 'Bypass'). You can now use your iOS device for live play or practice without the need for other effects boxes, amps or modelers.

We've built some pretty cool practice tools into AmpliTube iOS. These tools allow you to:

  • Play along with your favorite music from your device library
  • Isolate sections of pre-recorded material and loop them for continuous play
  • Slow down sections to learn difficult passages
  • 'No Voice' button cancels the center of the mix (where vocals and leads are typically placed) allowing you to sing or play along with the original material.
Record your performances

AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE and AMpliTube Slash come with a built-in single track recorder, expandable to 4 tracks. Immediately you can record your performance, length limited only by your device memory. When you expand the recorded to 4-track recorder with Master Effects (via in-app purchase), you'll have a complete mobile recording solution built right into your device. Create full songs and compositions right on your iOS device, and export them in WAV or MP3 formats to share.

The recorder features our re-amping function which allows you to record a riff, then go back and apply a different tone setup to get a completely different sound without having to re-record it. Once you're happy with the sound, click the 'apply' button and move to the next track.

The Master Effects section allows you to do a few things, mainly fine-tune your finished recording with EQ and Compression, but also allows you to add ambience and depth to your recordings with a master send reverb feature. Each channel has a reverb send slider that allows you to send part or all of the signal to a fully adjustable master reverb section. This gives each track it's own space to occupy in the mix and adds a tremendous amount of life and depth to your song.

We've also added some killer vocal effects to AmpliTube via the in-app purchase feature. These effects come straight from our popular VocaLive app for singers and vocalists and feature a 3-part harmonizer (Choir), Morph (vocal manipulator), Pitch Fix (pitch correction), Doubler and a De-Esser. Use the iRig Mic handheld microphone, the iRig PRE microphone preamp (allows you to use any XLR mic with your iOS device), or your built-in device mic to add vocals and sound effects to your composition.

We're adding new models of gear to mix on a regular basis. The in-app purchase feature allows you to expand your AmpliTube app when you want to. You can start with the AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE or AmpliTube Slash app, then add to your collection of gear when you want.

I have an Moto G, android phone and iRig state that it will work with an android system. I used it with a Beyer MCE 58 ominidirectional microphone which is a great microphone. One problem I have is that I can't monitor myself when recording audio. Nothing comes out of the headphones, it is massively important to be able to hear yourself when recording interviews etc. I found that when I record audio onto the iRig app the audio is always garbled but when I record audio using the HD Audio Recorder Pro App (free) the audio is fine. As for sound quality I would say its good but its not 100% professional. I normally use the Beyer MCE 58 with a mini disc recorder (this was a standard BBC newsroom set up in the early 2000's). I fancied just testing the set up with a phone. The quality onto the mini disc over the quality onto the phone is better. The phone audio is slightly tinny however it is good and could be used for community radio but I wouldn't recommend it for professional radio. But not being able to monitor myself renders the iRig as not a viable option for recording interviews (this could be just my phone, this could be just a bum unit?) Overall for £26 its good. The day that a phone company puts in a dedicated microphone jack alongside a headphone jack will be the day that recording onto mobile phones takes a big step forward and it will happen. Until then I will stick with the older style of MD Recorder and Mic, which still does a brilliant job. I returned the unit with no questions asked by Amazon. Nice!

I use this mic for producing radio and podcasts from my ipad or android phone. It really does produce a better sound on both devices, and has an adjustable switch for proximity. It somewhat mutes background noise which is helpful. Pleased with my purchase.

Huge improvement on the original iRig, the signal is clean and clear with no noticeable background noise (except what you would expect from single coils, even when using a guitar with single coil pickups the sound is quieter than normal). Nice choice of cables too so you can hook it up to your macbook via usb, your iPhone 5/6 lightning connection and even older iOS devices that use the 32 pin cable.

Running this with my macbook and using Native Instruments GuitarRig is such a great practice/recording setup, the Amplitube app is good if your on the go or in a hotel room but the quality from GuitarRig is superior and with the added bonus of using Logic Pro's built in effects (especially their space designer reverb) your in guitar heaven

For my own amusement, I write and record songs using Garageband on my iPad. Up till now, I have recorded my vocals by holding the iPad to my lips and singing into the iPad's internal mic, which is more than a little awkward (and looks kind of stupid). So I splashed out on the iRig mic, and I'm very pleased with it. There are three settings on the mic to suit the recording of various volumes. I have found the middle setting to be most useful for recording my vocals, although the mic has to be VERY close to my lips to get an acceptable recording level in Garageband. The recorded sound of my vocals is warm, although the mic's close proximity to my lips does produce some popping sounds on certain words. I'm still playing about with settings and position of the mic but I'm delighted with the its potential in Garageband.
The mic, however, takes on a new lease of life when used with IK Multimedia's own apps, Vocalive and iRig Recorder, free versions of which are available on Apple's app store for the iPad. The mic has definitely been optimised for these dedicated apps, so the quality of sound and increased gain are very apparent compared to within Garageband. My intention now is to record all my instrumental tracks in Garageband, then import the recording into Vocalive, where I can add my vocals using all the available effects built into the app. Unfortunately, this requires Vocalive to be upgraded from the free app, which costs a whopping £25.00 if it's to include the 8 track recorder. A lot of money, but at a total of £54.00 for Vocalive and the mic (I got it for £29.00 on Amazon), I think it's money well spent. All in all I'm absolutely delighted with my iRig Mic, and can highly recommend it.
Finally, a word on delivery. I ordered the iRig mic on Good Friday, so because it was the Easter weekend I thought it would take ages to arrive. Unexpectedly, I took delivery on the following Tuesday, so five stars for delivery.

    This item is a total let-down, for both Android or iOS/Apple users. You're much better getting something like the Vox AmPlug which does exactly what it should do, and skips the phone interface idea. The iRig idea on paper sounds awesome, and perhaps is a bit too good to be true;

    1) The iRig does not work on any of the Android handsets I've tried. Despite this being advertised as doing so, I've tried it out on a Sony Xperia, Motorola Moto X gen2 and a LG Nexus 5X and none of these handsets work with it. Try it on an iPhone and it does work BUT.. (and this is the other major issue):

    2) There are constant and many in-app purchases. And the app hounds you constantly to buy them in the form of virtual pedals (for those of you buying this as a present, pedals are what affect the guitar signals to create different effects - a major reason you would buy something like this for someone). And they're not even cheap. You do get a very limited selection to use for free, but it's pointless getting something like this with only three effects. The pedals range between £3 each and £50 for a pack, and they are only usable on other iRig equipment, meaning they're completely useless in other scenarios.

    3) The instructions are just in pictures, like ikea. And the frustrations with ikea are shared with this product. There any several versions of the app (only one version is free) and there's not much of a clue which one you're supposed to use, or what the differences of them are. I think they just hope that you're stupid enough to buy one without doing some research on the app store.

I have returned mine and will not be buying anything from IK any time soon as they clearly cannot be trusted. the iRig is a gimmick with the clear aim of extorting more money from you for it to be at all useful.
