I have spent lots of money on many reading schemes to encourage my dyslexic son to read before coming across Barrington Stoke books. The fact I could find a book that matched my son's reading age with his interest level was a huge attraction. Most reading schemes have very basic stories which is fine when a child is just learning to read in reception and year 1. However, with a dyslexic but highly intelligent child a basic Biff, Chip and Kipper story is of no interest.(or to the adult if I am honest.) Barrington Stoke books are unique, as far as I know, in having books written at different reading ages and cognitive levels. 'I Spy' is a tale about a boy whose father is a secret agent. The boy uses his father's specialist equipment to help children to defeat bullies. The story was well written and held my son's interest. In fact he sat and read several chapters in one sitting - unheard of in our home. I would recommend this book for a reluctant reader. The suggested reading age was 6.5 and interest level 10+ which was perfect for my 8 year old. It is a pity these books aren't more widely stocked.
