But that's not why you need to get this book. Though Carl Reiner is, get this, 90 years old, he has managed to conquer yet another medium:
This brilliant writer, actor, director, producer and oddly compelling dancer has created an e-book where one minute you are hearing him tell a story about the days of hosting game shows where people smoked like the maddest of Mad Men throughout the broadcast, and then, right there on the page, is a video of one of the oddest game shows I've ever seen. On another page he talks about Mel Brooks, and right there, right next to his words, is a video of Mel Brooks cavorting in a swim suit on Fire Island. And you know what, he looks...surprisingly good!*
*This is the review blurb that Mel gave for Carl's wonderful collection of short stories, so it's not that mean for me to use it to review his swimsuit modeling. It's, well...surprisingly kind.
The whole book is like that. There are dear home movies of his kids and dog, you can hear his beloved and brilliantly talented cabaret singing wife Estelle in a recording made in HER 90's, the whole thing makes you wish that Carl were your Uncle, and these were your family stories you were hearing. This book will help you pretend that something that wonderful has happened to you. I laughed out loud so hard it woke my husband from a dead sleep, and I sobbed when I read of how much he loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren.
Please, please, please get and read and watch and listen to this amazing book and then tell everyone you know to read it. It's a treasure. Just like Carl.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!
THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW is my all-time favorite show. And I once got to hear Mr. Reiner speak at a WGA seminar. He walked right past me but I was too in awe to say anything to him.
Anyway, I loved MY ANECDOTAL LIFE. I REMEMBER ME is more anecdotal than a true biography--which suits this reader just fine. Anyone would be privileged to be able to hang out with Mr. Reiner for an afternoon, listening to him tell stories. Both books offer that opportunity.
It's a light read from a very warm heart.
all the best
