American academic and writer, Jan Vidor, arrives in Italy to stay in a converted limonaia, which is part of the estate of a beautiful Tuscan property named the Villa Chiari, where she intends to enjoy the sunshine and the Italian way of life as she carries out her historical research. Part-owner of the property is Beatrice Doyle, nee Salviati, a divorcee with whom Jan becomes on friendly terms. As time passes and Jan travels between the USA and Italy, the two women grow closer and Beatrice begins to relate to Jan pieces of information about her family’s troubled past, including the death of her uncle who, in the 1940s, was shot dead at the Villa Chiari, a death that occurred during a partisan shootout - but which Jan discovers may have come from the hand of someone closer to home. Whilst researching into Italy’s fascist past, Jan finds herself delving deeper into the Salviati family’s history and uncovers a wealth of stories that she feels would make a very good novel. When during a conversation between Jan and Beatrice, Jan expresses her interest in Beatrice’s story and Beatrice says “I give it to you”, Jan thinks that Beatrice is offering her the story to do with as she wishes - but is she?
An interesting family story which moves backwards and forwards in time and one in which we learn not only about Beatrice’s life, including her marriage and her life in the USA, but also about her wealthy family’s chequered past and of its involvement in, or rejection of, fascism. As noted by another reviewer writing here, an aspect of the book which is emphasised in the 'blurb' and which looks at the question of who owns stories once they have been told is an intriguing one, but one that is not fully explored - which is a shame as this would have made this novel a deeper and even more interesting read. That said, I enjoyed this book and read it practically in one sitting and I look forward to reading more by Valerie Martin.
