Product Description

Product Description

I Give It A Year is a brand new comedy from the writer of Borat and Bruno that lifts the veil on the realities of the first year of marriage.

Starting where other romantic comedies finish, I Give It A Year asks what happens after the epic romance and the fairy-tale wedding? When the confetti has been recycled and the presents packed away.

Since they met at a party, ambitious high-flyer Nat and struggling novelist Josh have been deliriously happy despite their differences. As those luminary philosophers DJ Kool Kat and Paula Abdul once decreed, it appears that opposites attract, Josh is a thinker, Nat’s a doer, he’s laissez faire and she’s quite anal….but the spark between them is undeniable.

Their wedding is a dream come true, but not everyone shares their excitement. Family, friends and even the minister who marries them aren’t convinced that they can last.

As they settle into real life together, their apparent incompatibility only makes Nat and Josh more determined to make it work, but soon the absurdities and flaws they once found so endearing are irritating the hell out of each other. Chloe, Josh’s ex-girlfriend, and Guy, Nat’s handsome American client, could offer attractive alternatives…….. With their first anniversary approaching, neither wants to be the first to give up, but will they make it?

From Amazon.co.uk

If you're one of those who sits through the average romantic comedy and instantly tires of the formula, then the makers of I Give It A Year very much have you in mind. For this is a film that starts with the wedding, and then charts how things, bluntly, don't go to plan in the twelve months that follow.

The couple at the heart of the story are played by Rafe Spall and the always-excellent Rose Byrne, and neither of them play characters who come out of this particularly well. If there's a problem with I Give It A Year, it's that it's hard to root for the key duo, no matter how much fun the performances are. However, very much in the film's favour is the quality of its jokes. Director Dan Mazer has form working on the likes of Borat, and his ability to generate a giggle, whether comfortable or not, is very much to the movie's credit.

Furthermore, Mazer wisely stocks his film with some excellent supporting players. We don't see enough of the likes of Minnie Driver on screen, and her cameo here is a welcome one. Furthermore, Stephen Merchant's wedding speech is pitched exceptionally well, balanced cringe and laughs adeptly. And Anna Faris adds another good comedic role to her own resume.

I Give It A Year is sometimes a little raw, and certainly not a first date movie. But it is a funny one, and it is a movie that's willing to take some risks with the genre in which it finds itself. For that, and many other reasons, it deserves real credit. --Jon Foster

In places very funny (essentially whenever Stephen Merchant is on screen) this is a mildly entertaining, if formulaic, romantic comedy. I liked the two leads (Rafe Spall and Rose Byrne) and thought that it was a fundamental flaw in the film that the chemistry between them was, ironically, very good and convincing. They seemed made for each other. Hence the flaw. The biggest problem, however, was the story's slightness and contrivance, and that it's over-arching take on marriage was bitter and cynical. It is a product of its time. In places cruelly funny, but empty of a core of humanity.

A subversive take on the rom-com genre, more of a com-rom, definitely not a chick-flick. Very British, some rather crude humour which obviously is not to everyone's taste. As usual, Simon Baker was fabulous. I found it very funny, even on 2nd and 3rd viewing, the dove scene was particularly hilarious. So I'm looking forward to watching it again on DVD, and particularly hoping for some funny out-takes with the doves on Simon's head and Rose hiding under the table.

I'd never heard of this film till I stumbled across it late one night on TV. It's quite clear from the packaging what to expect so I wasn't expecting anything other than a rom-com. But this rom-com provides a continuous flow of laugh-out-loud dialogue and many more subtle moments of humour. There are some great cameo performances and who cares if the situations are cliches and the storyline predictable? You don't watch films like this for a great cultural experience. For entertainment value it's great and the writing is a cut above the usual rom-com screenplay. I've watched it again recently with a few friends and a couple of bottles of wine. It's a long time since I've laughed as much.

I always feel bad about being negative towards the British film industry. We don't have Hollywood's budget so I always try to support the national film industry. And, `I Give it a Year' certainly boasts an impressive cast of fine British (and even American) actors.

It's about a couple who have only known each other for seven months before they decide to get married. This film charts the first year of their subsequent life together. The characters are all beautiful, rich, thin people who work in trendy London offices, live in stylish Victorian apartments and can afford lavish, high-society weddings. The male characters are either or both selfish or stupid (Rafe Spall attempting to `out-annoy' Jar Jar Binks at some stages). And the American characters are seemingly parachuted into the story to save the lovelorn Brits.

I found the film a bit of an enigma. I stuck with it to the end and enjoyed some of it. Every scene felt like a sketch that would fit right in during an (adult) sketch show (think `That Mitchell and Webb Look' or `Armstrong and Miller'), however, using it in the context of an ongoing narrative, it just didn't work. The parts were funny; it's just they didn't seem to go with each other.

With the calibre of acting talent amassed here, it should have been brilliant, yet, despite being funny, it somehow left me cold. A weird contradiction in film-making.

This film didn't cut the mustard with me. When it first did the rounds I dismissed it out of hand it as probably just another US chick flick. Then read a recent review that was quite complimentary and, seeing the film had a number of familiar British actors, we gave it the benefit of the doubt. Sadly we found it lightweight, at times crass with very unconvincing characters and tedious trite dialogue.

The so called humour was oddly stilted, in the way of a film that's not quite in sync. Frequently the script failed to tread the thin line between genuine off-colour wit and crudity. I cringed.

A good example is when the leading couple decide to visit a marriage counsellor. The scene was handled with the subtlety of a sledgehammer driving home a nail. Totally unbelievable where a touch of finesse could have made it very amusing.

Overall forgettable... well within a year.

Morally dubious British rom com with a few decent jokes, and not that much else. The two leads Rose Byrne, and Rafe Spall are very unappealing from the outset, and left me feeling that nobody here really deserves a 'happily ever after' ending. Nice to see Minnie Driver pop up, although she doesn't get much to do. It kept the missus quiet for a bit, but thank goodness I didn't shell out for this and caught it on tv.

My advice - watch the trailer, see the best jokes in 2 minutes flat, and find something else to watch

Anyone watching this should have a high tolerance for awkward moments - but it is really funny.
Sort of like 4 Weddings and a Funeral combined with Love and other Disasters.
Quirky and totally different from every other classic rom com. Simon has a scene stealing feathery
moment with Rose and Anna has a really funny take on threesomes. It is definitely a modern comedy without being awful like Knocked Up. Definitely probably more enjoyable to a Brit than an American but great for anyone with a sense of humor.

Listen hard and you will hear some good one liners but it is nowhere near as good as similar films such as 4 Weddings/Nottinghill etc.
