'Paperwings' kicks us off, and Jurado is full pelt vocally, while surging, barr chords and pumping drums drive the song forward. Likewise 'Dancing' continues the theme, like a waking beast, Jurado rumbles along, with distorted 'organic' guitars and feedback as support.
I agree that tracks such as 'Birdcage' and 'Big Deal' lack the subtlety of his acoustic work, but this is more than made up for on some of the other quieter tracks, such as 'Inevitable', 'Parade' and 'Like titanic', which blend quiet guitars, xylophone and quiet atmospherics in an hypnotic way. 'Never ending tide' and the brilliant 'Lose my head' are wonderful songs, gradually gaining power as the song progresses. The latter is particularly good - one of his best.
Yes, there are a couple of songs which break no new ground and would fit nicely on his first debut LP, but take 5/6 great tracks, 4/5 good tracks and a couple of average ones and for me, you don't get 'average'. I would like to say 4.5, but Amazon don't do things by half, so it's 5 (to make up for the raw deal it got in the first review, in my opinion)!
If you have a few Jurado albums and have liked them, you should buy this one - a bargain at the current Amazon price!
Fans of Jurado's other work may be disappointed to learn that this time he has tried to be a bit more upbeat and has adopted a perchant for electric guitars. While opener 'Paperwings' displays Jurado's talent for producing highly capable melancholy, many of the other tracks, such as 'Birdcage' and 'Big Deal' struggle to match the quality of his earlier work. While the album does include other moments of near genius like 'Air Show Disaster' and 'Dancing', the average quality of the tracks is well below par.
Perhaps Jurado was attempting to find a different niche with this album, and perhaps it will go on to be his biggest selling work (which would justify the change). But frankly artists like Elliot Smith are doing this mid-tempo lite-rock a lot better. Go back to making acoustic stuff Damien, please.

This guy deserves to be discovered on a massive scale but in truth I'm very okay with him remaining relatively underground. I believe this allows Mr. Jurado to continue to make the music that he wants to make. That is important because, believe me, you want what he is offering.
