Amazon Review

Hyperion is the first of a much-heralded two-part work -- including the The Fall of Hyperion--about the last days of a vibrant yet self-destructive galactic civilization of humans called the Hegemony. The Hegemony is doomed because in exchange for the knowledge needed to conquer the stars, the human species sold its soul to a hive of machine-based intelligence known as Technocore. Six people embark on a pilgrimage to Hyperion, their only hope for redemption, to seek the help of the Shrike, a half- mechanical, half-organic creature that inspires both terror and devotion in its subjects. The book won the 1990 Hugo Award for Science Fiction. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Praise for Dan Simmons and Hyperion
"Dan Simmons has brilliantly conceptualized a future 700 years distant. In sheer scope and complexity it matches, and perhaps even surpasses, those of Isaac Asimov and James Blish."--The Washington Post Book World
"An unfailingly inventive narrative . . . generously conceived and stylistically sure-handed."--The New York Times Book Review
"Simmons's own genius transforms space opera into a new kind of poetry."--The Denver Post
"An essential part of any science fiction collection."--Booklist --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A friend recommended this book (thank you Sarah!) and I've been spellbound with the story from the start. A sci-fi Canterbury Tales so vividly described. And in Brawne Lamia's tale about sentient AI's and walls of ICE, a character called Gibson - that can only be a nod to William Gibson and his world of Neuromancer, one of my favourite authors. Ordering the next book now!

The Fall of Hyperion, or indeed the entire four books series, is probably the best sci-fi ever written. I cannot praise it enough. The stories, the people, the detail are all awe-inspiring. Thank you Dan Simmons for sharing Hyperion with us!

Overall a well-written book, putting a spin on a literary classic. Some of the characters' tales were more absorbing than others but that is to be expected as we see ourselves in, and click with, individuals in the book (the curse of multiple character plot lines), but the frame story held me to the end and has successfully prompted me to buy the next in the series.

The story is taken up in the fall of Hyperion immediately where it left off (with a cliffhanger ending) in Hyperion. The reasons for the individual stories in the first book become apparent quickly and the surprise inclusion of keats (the poet) becomes more obvious as the story continues. I will not say to much about it (i dont wish to give away the plot) except that much is explained in Dan Simmons marvelous and delightful, always well immagined, and wonderfully written sequel to Hyperion. Very highly recommended.

Dan Brownesque in terms of juggling multiple characters/plots - fast paced with a big dollop of sci-fi thrown in for good measure.
