Hyperion is the first of a much-heralded two-part work -- including the The Fall of Hyperion--about the last days of a vibrant yet self-destructive galactic civilization of humans called the Hegemony. The Hegemony is doomed because in exchange for the knowledge needed to conquer the stars, the human species sold its soul to a hive of machine-based intelligence known as Technocore. Six people embark on a pilgrimage to Hyperion, their only hope for redemption, to seek the help of the Shrike, a half- mechanical, half-organic creature that inspires both terror and devotion in its subjects. The book won the 1990 Hugo Award for Science Fiction. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Praise for Dan Simmons and Hyperion
"Dan Simmons has brilliantly conceptualized a future 700 years distant. In sheer scope and complexity it matches, and perhaps even surpasses, those of Isaac Asimov and James Blish."--The Washington Post Book World
"An unfailingly inventive narrative . . . generously conceived and stylistically sure-handed."--The New York Times Book Review
"Simmons's own genius transforms space opera into a new kind of poetry."--The Denver Post
"An essential part of any science fiction collection."--Booklist --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I am puzzled by the many rave reviews. I enjoy sci-fi and I enjoy other literature. I will also put up with some literary flaws in sci-fi as long as the story is engaging. Read morePublished 26 days ago by Paul Garner
As a stand alone, I would give this 5 stars - mainly for the sheer inventiveness of the traveller's tales. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Nick Smith
For me this book started slow but once it got going, it was fascinating.
The book follows 7 people on a pilgrimage to the Time Tombs on Hyperion. Read more
Call me old fashioned but there was too much gratuitous violence, sex and foul language. It's supposed to add realism, but the finest novels avoid most of it and are all the better... Read morePublished 2 months ago by Astare
