I've waited for a biography on Wallace Hartley, TITANIC's heroic bandmaster, for a very long time, and this book has fulfilled my expectations. Ms. Carroll has done astonishing detective work, tracing Wallace forward from his humble beginnings in Colne, Lancashire, through his budding musical career in the North of England and through 80 voyages across the Atlantic, on to his tragic collision with fate -- accepting a last minute request to lead the band on the doomed RMS TITANIC. Ms. Carroll's writing style is engaging and she knows how to build suspense; her book is a real page-turner! During James Cameron's TITANIC, people all over the world wept as Hartley and his orchestra played "Nearer My God to Thee." If you're curious about the charismatic young violinist who comforted TITANIC's passengers with music at the cost of his life, I can't recommend this book highly enough!

I had looked forward to reading this book, especially as my Grandfather was a distant cousin of Mr Wallace Hartley. However, I was totally disappointed for the following reasons:
Throughout, the author gives information described as 'Might or might have been', 'Could or could have been', 'probably this, that' etc. This continues throughout the book, which makes one think she is using nothing but guesswork.

Any information regarding Wallace Hartley's family, addresses where they lived, education establishments and places of work, are all easily accessed through the Census Documents, but nothing further is actually proved by the author.
She also goes to great lengths in describing the local history of places such as Leeds & Harrogate, which are okay, but not quite to the point of the book. I am just glad she did not indicate that Mr Hartley 'might' have been on Titanic.

This gives a biopic of the bandmaster on the Titanic, Wallace Hartley. Some of what I read I already knew from a similar book, but some information was a bit like guesswork; there were a few..'This probably happened', and some of the information could probably have been more accurate if researched properly.

It is only a thin book but the print size is quite small, so that may account for that, and there are a number of photographs within the book.
