Her Husband's Lover. Madelynne Ellis

I received this via Netgalley in return for an honest review. I don't gush and give false praise - I don't believe that helps readers or authors so what you read is what I truly feel about a book.

Go back 3-4 years and I used to love historical novels, but for last few years I've not read any - but I do like a good erotic romance and the historical setting of this one added an extra dimension of attraction for me. Emma is married to Lyle Langely, she chose him carefully after coming across him making love to a man. This was what she needed, to be married to keep her father and society happy, but to someone who didn't want her sexually. She cannot bear to be touched, even the mildest of skin contact from her family repels her. We don't get to find out why til quite far on in the novel, but it explains so well how she could go from hating and being repulsed at the thought of touch to feeling, and acting on her attraction to a visitor to her fathers house, Lord Darleston. She and Lyle are staying there as her father arranges prize fights and she is needed to act as host to the visitors, as only she and her sister are remaining of the family. What she soon discovers is her husband was Lord Darlington's lover in the past, and the draw between them is as strong as ever.

I enjoyed this book, the historical setting is just perfect with all the hypocrisy and revulsion society threw upon homosexuals, the way ladies were second class and controlled and how affairs were commonplace and yet had to be kept secret or the pair would be shunned by society. In this book Lyle wants to rekindle his relationship with Lord Darlington (Robert).

I normally avoid same sex stories as they don't have any attraction for me but this is such a good story that I enjoyed reading it. It is about Emma who for reasons unknown is frigid although all is revealed later in the book. She is in a peaceful and platonic marriage of convenience to Lyle who is homosexual. Robert who is bi-sexual (and married to a harridan) comes to stay. This is where the fireworks start for both Lyle and Emma. The characters are very well depicted and the author has tried to make it as true to the period as possible. There were some archaic words that I had never heard before so it was interesting finding out what they meant. There is sex and it is mainly homosexual but it is well written. All in all (if you'll pardon the pun!), I thought that this was a really good story.

I just book this book because it was an historical novel and did not think that the husband's lover would be a man. However, I really enjoyed this book, it was well written and if you do not want to read about a husband and wife who share the same male lover then this is not the book for you. I have given the book 5 stars because I really did enjoy the story and you can fault the author for the good work put into writing the book.

If you are easily offended when it comes to sex this is not for you. Got this on free down load and wasnt my usual type of read, but once I started it was soon drawn into the characters and felt for each of them in their own way, given the era this is set in it is very raunchy and not your usual shy miss!
Can imagine that some would find the male sex parts offensive - so you are warned if this isnt your thing dont read it and then give it a poor review the title gives you hint what it is about.
Well written with good characters - loved it.

This is a somewhat unusual romance, involving, as it does, both husband and wife falling for the husband's lover. Despite the rather odd "affliction" suffered by the wife, the relationships develop in a believable way, stimulated by a variety of sex scenes. The plot is also influenced by the illegality of homosexuality at this point in English history. The characters of the central players had a degree of richness that made them believable, though perhaps the lover's wife was a bit on the extreme side.

I picked this book up not realising that it was the 5th book in a series, so I suspect that this was why I felt I was missing some of the back story. However, this was not a serious issue as this book more or less works as a stand-alone story.

For some reason, this last book of the series is much cheaper than the previous ones, which makes it good value.

3.5/5
This is my third book by Madelynne Ellis, and so far I'm really impressed with her writing. She writes lovely, likeable characters and she does her research. She is also a British erotic romance writer, which is particularly appealing to me. I've enjoyed the sassiness of this book, and the M/F/M interactions were pretty hot. Recommended. It was a freebie on Amazon(not anymore) which you can grab along with Anything But Vanilla (not a freebie anymore)!

well written historical romance with a difference.

I very much enjoyed both the story line and the setting for this rather unlikely tale about a gay man, his heterosexual wife and his bisexual former lover. Will it end well? You'll have to read it to find out.

Contains a bit of 'everything' so if you're of a nervous disposition have your smelling salts to hand...
