Product Description

Frank Calder (Oliver Reed), an outlaw leader, is dissatisfied with his wandering, shooting life and decides to better himself. He kidnaps Melissa Ruger (Candice Bergen), a substitute school teacher, and insists that she teach him how to read. Melissa s husband, Brandt (Gene Hackman), is a wealthy, sadistic man. When he discovers that his wife is missing, he gathers up a posse and sets out in pursuit. Armed with high powered rifles the pursuers pick off Calder s gang one by one. When all of Calder s gang have been killed Brandt hunts down Melissa and Calder for a final violent showdown.

The basic story..A woman is taken hostage by a gang of outlaws led by notorious bandit Frank Calder (Oliver Reed). Her ruthless cattle baron husband (Gene Hackman) enraged that anyone has dared take his "property" sets up a posse to take the outlaw gang down one by one.
I know it's not the most original of stories but on the whole I really like this western. The direction and cinematography is of a high standard and the cast is good. Hackman is brilliant as usual and Reed also puts in a great performance. It's not a clear good guys vs bad bad guys as there are nasty scenes carried out by all and it's actually quite sleazy at times. The action is super cool and very bloody (probably one of the most violent westerns from that time). I thought the ending was a little weird and quite surreal, but still good with some great photography and there's also a decent score from Riz Ortolani (Cannibal holocaust). Cool stuff!

It's been quite a few years since I have seen this particular western. The first time being when it was originally released at one of my three local fleapits. I also recall seeing it on TV at least once many moons ago, but that version was hacked to pieces by the censor.

As far as this uncut version is concerned you only have two options available on the DVD. To watch it in French with English subtitles or watch it in English with French subtitles. There is no option available to turn the subtitles off, as a result I have only given it three stars, when it really should have four. On my own personal rating scale I've given it a rating of 70%.

This film is somewhat dated now, but nevertheless any half decent western fan should have The Hunting Party in their collection. The lead actors being Oliver Reed, Gene Hackman and Candice Bergen.

In passing the three fleapits were the Odeon and ABC on Holloway Rd and the Independent near Finsbury Park (North London). Much to my disgust the latter became a live pop concert venue sometime in the mid to late seventies if I remember rightly. Of course by then I had started to go into West End on a very regular basis to watch films in cinemas which afforded more comfortable seating.

This is a gripping and powerful story that pulls no punches with the actors giving strong performances.. Candice Bergen plays a woman married to a brutal and sadistic cattle baron [Gene Hackman]. She is kidnapped by a gang of outlaws led by Oliver Reed who takes her from the school where she is helping the teacher because he wants to learn to read.
At the time of the abduction the rancher is away with a group of friends on a hunting party trying out new long range rifles.

The rancher and his friends pursue the outlaws with deadly consequences. His wife refuses to be cowed, eventually she falls in love with her captor after discovering that her captor is more tender than the man she married.

This is a film that doesn't compromise, it maintains its integrity with a shocking climax. Oliver Reed has never been better, Gene Hackman is awesome and Candice Bergen is excelllent.

This is a wonderful story, beautifully filmed, great locations.

This film Ive been trying get hold for quite a while Its got ALL the great stars in the film Oliver Reed Gene Hackman Great Great Actors Olive Reed didnt make many Westerns But He was great in this film I watched it over and over again

A great western,overlooked by time with 3 top stars at the helm.Gene Hackman as the wealthy husband hell bend on rescuing his wife,played by Candice Bergin from the evil clutches of Oliver Reed.Clearly after the hardship she endured starring in Soldier Blue,Ms Bergin is back for more being badly mistreated once again.Check this out if you don't mind a "not so happy ending".
