The book takes you on the journey to recovery, a warts and all story that would not be out of place as a side story to Trainspotting. Though this is no work of fiction, the main character is real. He is endearing and humourous, but his behaviour is no less shocking as he wallows from one form of substance abuse to another.
Through it all, is the love he is shown and the efforts made from family and loved ones to steer him towards his path of acceptance and recovery. By the end of the book you gain that real sense of purpose and pride he has found both in himself, but also of his family and friends in him.
A real rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish.
The people in his life, both family and friends are key to the outcome of the book. Their willingness to do whatever it takes for the author to recover and much of the book explores his growing understanding and acceptance of the power of unconditional love.
As someone who taught drugs prevention programmes to young people for many years, I feel that this book should be required reading for anyone working in this field, if only to get a sense of what it is like to understand the motivation behind substance misuse, and without giving too much away, that it is possible to recover, rehabilitate and become a fully functioning member of society once again.
