This book is darker and edgier than anything H J Bellus has written so far and to be honest I wasn't too sure it was going to be for me but it turned out that H J used her great style and character development to create a fast-paced, twisty, dark suspense love story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Bay is a young and innocent seeming woman who has moved from home to be independent. A virgin who works at night in what is depicted as the shadowy and seedy underworld of a strip club as a waitress whose exploration into this underbelly leaves her aching for Van, a dark and mysterious man who exudes danger and sex. The story itself continues in a should they/shouldn't they fashion where all is not as it seems. A spate of murders that occur close to where Bay lives, she must decide if the strange man next door is the man she believes him to be or is in fact a murderer with her in his sights!

Van is written beautifully as this mysterious, dark and edgy man who seems to always be in the shadows. He is sexy as hell and it is this that drives Bay towards him and allows Van to develop into a more open character. The sex in this book is steamy and yes, it's a little fast paced in terms of Bay and Van's physical relationship but I think the book itself is so fast paced and gritty that it can be overlooked as just one of those things an author can't help when trying to fit so much in!

Bay's mother is the light in this book and I had many a laugh out loud moments imagining just how traumatic Bay's teenage years must have been with such a free spirited, pot smoking mother.

This book is a definite must-read and don't be put off that it's not H J Bellus' usual style. She manages this edgy plot very well and pulls off a decent story with some very sex moments! I loved Van and Bay and they are certainly one of my favourite H J couples.

Give this book a try....you won't regret it!

Basil 'Bay' Harper is an innocent, naive, nervous, young woman who wants her independence, some money and a chance at art school. With a hippy, pot smoking, albeit loving mother, an whorish bff who she keeps in the dark of her waitressing job in a strip joint, she embarks the trials and tribulations of slum city life, handsy customers and sticky floors.
Bad boy, foul mouthed, ex con, tattooed and scarred, Van
Hollis, is her neighbour, bouncer at the club and her infatuation.
It's a fast paced standalone written in Bay's pov. There's twists and turns, intrigue, very dark subject matter, foul language, deceit, betrayal, fighting, MC connections, a background story of murdered young women and lots and lots of sex.
My mixed feelings for this book is the pace...somethings were just too quick and strangely odd. My main wtf...is Bay's many personality changes throughout.
Nevertheless, believability factor aside, it was a readable piece of work and found it free.

3.5 stars

Basil Harper is a girl who wanted to try make an independent life for herself away from her hippy, pot smoking mum. Don't get me wrong she loves her mum dearly but craves a life for herself so she packs up and moves to the city. This is where she first spots her new neighbour Van in the run down neighbourhood they live in, he disappears at night and doesn't come home until dawn.
Bas is a virgin and her best friend Ivy has been trying to coax her into dating so she introduces her to Gannon. Bas is initially attracted to Gannon but can only picture Van when she's with him. Bas has been lying to Ivy and Gannon about where she works, she pretends she works in a late night cafe when she actually waitresses in a strip club and this is where she learns who Van is and this is where the magnetism starts between them when Ivy spots him screwing a stripper against the wall. He then walks in her front door covered in blood but why is the question? Is he really the serial killer behind the murders in the city?
Van is not long out of prison for being framed for a crime he didn't commit. His family hate him which has made him the dark broody man that he is. Van hides a few secrets from Bas and is initially determined not to give in to her although it doesn't last long and secrets are spilled.

Okay for me the storyline was good and it flowed well enough and there's just enough twist and turns to draw you in. However a couple of scenes were a little to fast paced for me and a bit unrealistic. The instalove was just a little to quick for me between Van and Bas and to be honest he didn't seem like the alpha big bad wolf I wanted him to be. Overall it was an enjoyable enough read that I am sure many others will love.

Wow, this was a lot grittier story than what I have read from HJ Bellus in the past and HJ did a great job in setting a dark, edgy and mysterious atmosphere.

For me, at times, the story felt a little rushed and in particular, I would have liked the ending and conclusion dragged out a little more. At times, I also felt that some of the language that the characters used not really fitting with the customers persona.

That being said, I really liked that the story was fast paced and engrossing. It was hot as hell and I'm a real sucker for a brooding bad boy. I was glad that HJ didn't soften up our Hero in any way.

One of the stars of the show for me was Basil's mother; her scenes really cut through the edginess and provided that snippet of light relief throughout.

HASH(0x905e0cc0) out of 5 stars Disappointment from middle to end. 26 Feb. 2016
By Dirty Words - Published on Amazon.com

This is not my first HJ Bellus series, her My Way series is one of the best, but this missed the mark totally. This is marketed as a dark read and it was not close to dark. Maybe if we got some of Vans pov then maybe it would have given us insight as to why this was dark. Also the blurb states that he walks through your front door covered in blood. Maybe I read something completely different but Van did not walk through her front door, he talked to her on her stoop with blood splatters on his shoes.
I guess maybe I was expecting darker. I loved Van, but got super irritated with Bay. For someone so sheltered she moved extremely quick into a cursing, love sick puppy. She got nervous around Gannon, but with Van she was watching things and playing along? Um, no. Sorry. The ending threw me off with no mention of the other players in the final conflict, I mean, did they die? Did they go to prison? Something, anything that would clear it up, along with who is killing the others, because it doesn't point blank say it. What about the other officer who talked to Bay at the station? So many questions that could have been answered that were necessary for the story that were completely ignored. Disappointed.

HASH(0x9052e4ec) out of 5 stars You're my story from beginning to end 22 Feb. 2016

If you like suspense, drama, revenge, lots of hot sex and a little crazy thrown in at the same time then this book is for you. HJ does an amazing job with character development and making you root for Van and Basil in this book.

Van has been wrongly accused of a crime and is fresh out of prison set on revenge and finding out who framed him. Basil has been sheltered, homeschooled and raised by a hippy mother. She is on her own in the big city and is set to try to make it on her own and get into art school.

"I don't remember what it felt like to be loved." "I promise you'll never forget." I assure him.

There is a lot of humor that I have come to love in HJ's books along with a plot twist that you never see coming. When you're broken sometimes you find the right person to make you whole again.

He's supposed to be scary, wicked, venomous...The bad one. He has scars to prove it. Some search for a love like it, but he found me. Left scars on my heart that will forever taint my soul. He's my Big Bad Wolf and now The Hunted my heart will forever search.

"You're my story from beginning to end."

HASH(0x905e0b34) out of 5 stars Hunted will leaving you wanting more--Great Read 22 Feb. 2016
By April R Symes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This was such a powerful book that will make you think and be grateful for the small things because it’s the dark that can reach out and get you. This is a dark romantic read, so dark and its is a steamy romance. If this this something you like, keep going on this review, if not, do not read further.
Basil (Bay) grew up on the poor side of the tracks but she grew up with a pretty , sweet, and rich friend Ivy who was there for her. Van has moved away from home to attend college and its art school that she wants to attend. Only thing is, she doesn’t have money to pay for college so she has taken up stripping to pay and she lives hand to mouth –things her mother and best friend do not know and she plans on never telling them. Then she runs into tall, dark and handsome Van Hollis across the hall. He really gets her motor running. But he doesn’t speak to her.
Next time she sees him is at the club where she is stripping. He flips out because she is stripping and he takes her home. There is this immediate chemistry between them that is like sex on a stick and if a match was lit, they both would go up in flames. But Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome Van is very alpha in his behavior toward Bey and he is very protective of her. They start this dance that is taking on a roller coaster ride of passion.
Bey has these friends she cares about –Ivy and Gannon. They are there for her during her crazy ride with Van- Oh and the ride had its ups –and those times were fantastic and then they had their downs which were bad. There were coming times which were bad, very very bad. The story that the author writes which leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat. Its a dark, passionate, highly charged, very sexual book with moments of terror that leaves you needing more.
There is a huge twist and turn in this book which made me jump and go WOW. You cannot go wrong in the read for this book.

My Ratjng: 4.7 stars *****

HASH(0x906cd4ec) out of 5 stars Captivating! 22 Feb. 2016

This was one intriguingly good read! I was hooked on the first chapter and found it hard to put down until 'The End'. The characters were deep and had a lot of amazing qualities about them. The story of Basil and Van was a rollercoaster ride of suspense. There were a lot of sex scenes. So if you enjoy that, this is definitely a book you will want to read. There were also some subjects that might be triggers for some readers. Typically I don't read this genre, but I did find myself engrossed in the plot until the very last page. Only a scattering of punctuation and grammatical errors...not enough to take away from the book itself. I give The Hunted 4 Stars. I can't wait to see what she has for us next!

I was given this Advanced Reader's Copy in return for an honest review and that is exactly what I have done.
