This second part of Tim Arnot's Flick Carter series is an exciting ride. Flick is pursued by a black-clad figure seemingly out to assassinate her. She hears him enquiring after the Carters. Later she finds that friends of hers have been killed by this man she calls Black Ghost. She is forced to make a bargain with Princess Jessica which results in her erstwhile boyfriend Shea running away from her in disgust.

I enjoyed the pace of the story and meeting characters I liked from the previous book. Tim Arnot's good people have flaws like the rest of us and his bad people are wonderfully hateful. Dialogue flowed well and there were new characters to love or hate. There's mayhem at the end. I really need to read Book Three to see how it all pans out in this splendid series. An excellent read all round.

I really enjoyed reading this. From the first three chapters that were released online as a teaser, I knew it was going to be a good read. There was lots to enjoy about this book, from how well written it was, to the enjoyable flow of the authors writing style. I ended up reading this book in one sitting! There was a lot happening that I just didn't expect and left me wanting to know more.

I loved how real the characters felt; the dialogue was believable, and the characters took time to learn how to do things, rather than being brilliant at it first time. I enjoyed seeing the way that Flick handled each situation, and felt genuinely sorry for her on multiple occasions. I also thought that Shea was a well written and likeable character and hope to see more from him in the future.

This is the second in the Felicity (Flick) Carter series of books, set in a post-apocalypse England where there's no technology, and martial rule keeps most people in order.

Even though she's very young, Flick has been using alcohol to drown her sorrows about losing her home, her family and her friends. She's kicked out of her village and ends up becoming a trainee in the Kingsmen. A lot of this book is her during her enforced training. I wasn't too interested in this bit,

We also follow Shea as he loses friends too. In the background we have the mystery man who is following Flick and killing anyone who gets in his way. We also have more of Princess Jessica/Lieutenant Dixon, who I think is my favourite character.

I am enjoying this world that the author has fleshed out. It might be England, but it's a very different one to now.

This book reminded me of The Three Musketeers albeit with heroines rather than heroes.

We are reintroduced to Flick as she struggles to come to terms with the aftermath of having been released from prison .The death of her brother is on her conscience as is the loss of her home and remaining family members. So begins her heartfelt quest and as she is reunited with prior acquaintances we find allegiances challenged and loyalties divided.

Action abounds in this swashbuckling tale, the story is well paced, balanced nicely with strong plotting and characters you want to believe in.

I became so absorbed in this world of flying karts, airships and adventure that I was taken by surprise when carnage ensued however the revelations as the tale neared its conclusion ensured I'll be first in the queue when the sequel is released.

Loved this! We rejoin Flick as she is having a hard time coping with everything that's happened and boy does she cope badly! Losing herself in a bottle and getting into all sorts of scrapes and dangerous situations before she is forced into becoming a Kingsman! Shea is there too and he's not having an easy time either, what with finding friends in a situation that nightmares are made of. The story flows wonderfully and is exciting and just plain fabulous! Well done Mr Arnot on giving me another great read. When's the next one ready?!!
